Collegian Training Director (WS)

Training Director 
The training director is a leader who oversees and trains all new hires at The Collegian. The training director is responsible for all editorial onboarding processes once writers, editors, designers and photographers are hired. 
The position is for the fall 2022 semester, with a possibility of work in the summer. The position requires a commitment of 5 hours per week of work-related duties. This is only a single position. 

The ideal candidate possesses the following qualities: 
  • Possesses a strong grasp on micro- and macro- editing and AP style and feels comfortable teaching that to others. 
  • Thinks ahead and plans for success. Has strong communication skills. 
  • Effectively balances time commitments outside of work. 
  • Has strong leadership skills and feels comfortable taking initiative 
  • Possesses a strong understanding of journalism ethics and can advise and guide new hires on ethical issues
  • Prioritizes creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all new hires.
  • Is flexible and willing to adapt to the changing environment of journalism and a college newsroom, which can include communicating and working during non-traditional hours.

Main Responsibilities 
  • Ensures all new reporters attend a reporter training.
  • Helps run reporter training alongside RMSMC student media adviser. All new hires should attend a reporter training and receive the approval of the training director before moving on to desired desks.
  • Hosts makeup reporter training as-needed for individuals unable to attend the reporter training.
  • Sets up and trains new hires in Slack, Monday.com and Wordpress 
  • Works alongside editor-in-chief and managing editors to train directors and editors in their managerial and editorial responsibilities including budget, payroll and editing articles.
  • Checks in with new hires frequently in beginning stages of working
  • Assists directors and editors with new hires when needed and when new hires are not meeting expectations. 
  • Answers questions about The Rocky Mountain Collegian and assists with advertising for new job positions when needed. 
  • Acts as the first point of contact for all new Collegian hires.
  • Creates a strategy to monitor the progress of new reporters and photographers.
  • Assists with the process of transferring from volunteer to paid positions. 
  • Keeps track of retention on each desk and adjusts training processes accordingly.
  • Holds exit interviews with those leaving The Collegian to better understand how The Collegian can improve retention.

Compensation: Compensation will be $13 per hour; students who are eligible may use this job with their University work-study. Colorado State University may conduct background checks on all final candidates. The expected start date is May 13 or as soon as the applicant can start thereafter.
