Parks and Recreation - Recreation Manager Summer Intern - Unpaid

Job Description:
  • Work with all Divisions in the Parks and Recreation Department
  • Attending meetings with Recreation staff
  • Learn about performing administrative functions including reviewing and prioritizing work orders, making job assignments, reviewing payroll, purchase orders, etc.
  • Learn about coordinate staff in planning and conducting special events.
  • Participate in discussions on planning, design and supervising of construction and reconstruction of Parks and Recreation areas such as playgrounds, pathways, etc. 
  • Participate in the discussions on preparation of departmental budget requests and proposals; prepare specifications on equipment and materials utilized in the operation and maintenance of areas. 
  • Discuss/learn about creation of procedures and policies, which will facilitate effective recreation, athletic, and aquatic programs. 
  • Learn about ways to run a comprehensive year-round community parks and recreation program that includes parks, community center, teen center, athletic complexes (baseball, football and soccer), ocean front beach, intra-coastal parks, natural areas, cemetery and marina.
  • Learn about management and supervision of assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; hires, trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed. Gives final departmental approval for leaves of absence, vacations and discharges.
  • Provides leadership and direction in the development of short and long range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates department activities with other departments and agencies as needed.
  • Understand how to communicate official plans, policies and procedures to commission, administration, staff and the general public.
  • Discuss options on ways to increase interest in parks and recreation programs through publicity, brochures with various community groups, and public contacts; speaks before citizens' groups, students and other organizations. (Special events/marketing)
  • Understand what role administration plays on a daily, monthly and yearly basis.

Minimum Requirements: 
Currently enrolled at a post-secondary institution or recent graduate majoring in recreation, public administration, physical education, or a related field.
