Extension is a major component of the University’s outreach organization serving Colorado’s 64 counties. Through its county, state, and federal partnerships, Extension currently focuses its efforts in Environmental Horticulture; 4-H Youth Development; Community and Economic Development; Family and Consumer Science; Health, Nutrition and Food Safety; Food Systems; Cropping Systems; Livestock and Range; Natural Resources; and Energy. Working closely with local and state advisory groups to determine local program needs and direction, Extension draws on the resources of 13 different departments in five colleges to provide non-credit educational programs based on research-generated knowledge. In 1952, a ranch consisting of 3,760 acres, and now known as the Eastern Colorado Research Center, was purchased by Colorado State University. The present facilities consist of more than 35 fenced pastures of native and seeded rangeland, 22 feedlot pens with 640 feet of bunkspace, enclosed working facilities with chute and scales for working and weighing the livestock. The Eastern Colorado Research Center is located midway between Akron and Sterling just east of State Highway 63. A sign located along the highway directs visitors to the headquarters.

Position Description:
This student will be involved in a study looking at Cow Pea as an alternative irrigated crop for Northeast Colorado. Some of the major functions include:
  • Monitoring water use of cow pea throughout the growing season and irrigating plots according to protocol.
  • Measure stress indices for future crop modeling.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Student must follow designed protocol for water management. (TW)
  • Student will work with research equipment to take necessary measurements. (TW)
  • Student must be able to record data taken and report to the lead investigators on progress during the growing season. (DP and V/WC)
  • Must be able to work as an individual at times and do the data collection required. (PA)

Required Skills:
  • Must already be accepted into the Extension Intern Program. (L)
  • Proficiency of computer electronics. (DP)
  • Must be able to use Excel, Word and other necessary computer programs. (DP)

Hourly Pay Rate:
The hourly pay rate for this position is $12.32 - $14.00. Starting pay rate will be commensurate with education and experience.
