Post Doctorate RA - Catalysis Science/Physical Biosciences

The Opportunity: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an outstanding research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work–life balance. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven postdocs come to PNNL to work with premier researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!

Contribute to PNNL’s goals as part of the Lab’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD). As a postdoctoral researcher in the Catalysis Science group, you will join a hardworking, multi-investigator team to explore the mechanistic details of artificial enzymes for energy applications. You will be mentored by Simone Raugei, Marcel Baer and Bojana Ginovska, as you carry out computational research in enzymatic catalysis for energy relevant reactions. The program focuses on studies of enzymatic reactions for the conversion of substrates relevant for energy applications.

The Ideal Candidate: If you are a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher ready to test your talents and training in computational catalysis and hone your skills at a national laboratory widely recognized for its work in the physical sciences, we want to connect with you. PNNL is committed to encouraging a work environment that promotes inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply; you do not need to meet all of the Preferred Qualifications to be considered. Please include a cover letter in your application and consolidate your application into a single file.

What you will do:
  • Work independently, take initiative, and work on team projects
  • Lead manuscript development and maintain a strong publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature
  • Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff within the Catalysis Science Group and across PNNL
  • Present research at conferences and project review meetings
  • Participate in the development of research proposals
  • Train and mentor others

About PNNL: At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment and excellent benefits including health insurance and flexible work schedules. PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living. The campus is only a 45-minute flight (or 3 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications
(not all need to be met):
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biology/Biochemistry/Physical Chemistry or related field strongly preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience in quantum chemical and/or classical, ab initio and qm/mm MD methodologies
  • Experience with some of the common computational chemistry programs (NWChem, Gaussian, CPMD, CP2K, GROMACS, Amber, NAMD or others)
  • Knowledge of basic concepts in studying biological systems
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic concepts

Preferred Education/Credentials:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biology/Biochemistry/Physical Chemistry or related field
  • Experience in computational chemistry
