Plant Protection Technician - Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Technician - Miami, FL

Plant Inspection Stations process large volumes of propagative, material which are being imported into the United States. If selected for the position you will assist with identification of potential pest interceptions and perform technical, specialized, field and laboratory duties that support projects pertaining to the inspection, treatment, and export of regulated agricultural commodities.

DUTIES

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist Supervisors, Plant Health Safeguarding Specialists (PHSSs), and Identifiers in implementing project activities, organizing the daily activities, tracking specimen, maintaining logs.
  • Review forms and enter data to support inspection, fumigation, phytosanitary certificate issuance, identification, and survey.
  • Inspect routine commodities for import to ensure no pest presence; report detected problems to an Identifier, PHSS or supervisor who make final determinations on infested materials.
  • Ensure that prohibited material is seized and disposed of in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist in submitting, editing, entering into the application information regarding the inspection, treatment, additional declarations, and official phytosanitary data.
  • Assist in the laboratory under the direction of Identifiers, including processing of urgent and routine specimens, sorting taxonomic groups, slide mounting, DNA extraction, tracking, curating.
  • Deploy and monitor survey traps and conducts visual surveys within or outside the port of entry.
  • Ensure scientific equipment is maintained and supplies are ordered and replenished as needed.
  • Answers incoming calls from customers to schedule appointments for import and export inspections and fumigations.
