Machine Repair Technician

Position Purpose The Machine Repair Technician 3 reports to Facilities Leadership or other manager/supervisor and may be responsible for the maintenance and repair of hydraulic, mechanical & instrumentation systems, including machine centers, by applying advanced knowledge of mechanical technologies and principles. This position utilizes internal and external resources to solve operational problems related to the above systems and works with more experienced technicians to resolve operational problems with production machinery and equipment in the most expedient and cost effective manner. This position may interface with production supervisors/managers on problem resolution and scheduling issues and mentor lower level technicians.

  • Essential Functions Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, such as engine lathes, milling, drilling, grinding, polishing, buffing, and CNC machining centers. Assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for equipment such as production machinery, production or development test equipment and support systems.
  • Fits and assembles parts to fabricate or repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Devises solutions to complex problems including fabrication of parts, system modifications to provide additional functionality and performs analysis on existing systems to determine process capability.
  • Diagnoses and corrects the most challenging problems in production machinery and/or test equipment.
  • Tests faulty equipment and applies knowledge of functional operation of electronic and mechanical units and systems to diagnose cause of malfunction. Performs routine preventive maintenance on mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and documents completion of these tasks in an electronic database. Instructs newer technicians in the proper methods of preventive maintenance on mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. May update and or create preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Tests electronic and electrical components and circuits to locate defects, using oscilloscopes, signal generators, ammeters, and voltmeters. Coordinates and participates in installation of equipment in test fixtures, connecting valves, pumps, hydraulic, mechanical controls, and instrumentation.
  • Replaces defective components and wiring and adjusts mechanical parts, using hand tools and power tools. Documents mechanical or electrical problems and escalates concerns to higher level technicians. Utilizes internal and external resources to implement solutions.
  • Aligns, adjusts dimensions and tolerances, trouble shoots mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions, using blueprints, schematics and precision-measuring instruments according to manufacturer specifications. Analyzes more advanced test results in relation to design or rated specification and test objectives; modifies or adjusts equipment to meet specifications.
  • Examines parts for conformance to system or component specifications using precision measuring instruments; performs precision alignment of machinery and balancing of rotating components. Updates and maintains documentation in agreement with equipment and system changes.
  • Advanced ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and assembly drawings for mechanical systems or machinery
  • Has an advanced understanding of the physical principles used in mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Understands applications of industrial electrical distribution, motor control circuits and is able to resolve moderately complex electrical problems with little or no assistance.
  • May mentor newer technicians on principles of operation and diagnostic techniques for production machinery and/or test equipment
  • Other Functions May enter information into computer to copy program from one electronic component to another
  • May provide technical support for Engineering on new equipment/system design and development

Qualifications - External
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Advanced verbal and written communications skills with the ability to effectively communicate with others in the organization.
  • Windows PC skills with advanced understanding of spreadsheets, word processing and WISE screens. Solid PLC programming skills.
  • Advanced problem solving and troubleshooting capabilities with limited guidance and ability to guide lower level techs.
  • Advanced ability to read and use a wide range of precision mechanical and electrical measurement devices and ability to train lower level techs on use
  • Ability to work in and contribute to a positive team atmosphere. Ability to mentor Level 1 and Level 2 positions.
  • Has advanced knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems and can resolve most problems with little assistance
  • Advanced ability to read and understand complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic schematics; ability to teach other technicians
  • Advanced understanding of customer service techniques and displays a high sense of urgency to meet customer requirements
  • Solid leadership skills; ability to ensure successful completion of assigned work across immediate team
  • Education or Formal Training High School diploma, GED or international equivalent required
  • Associates degree or international equivalent in Electronics, Mechanical or Industrial discipline preferred
  • Experience Required 7 years of machine repair experience required
  • Materials and Equipment Used Daily uses fasteners, electrical wire, motors, pumps, drive assemblies, and purchased machine parts
  • Routinely uses pressure gages, micrometers, machinist hand tools, ampere probes, digital multimeters, welding equipment, and machine tools (mill, lathe, drill press, etc.)
  • Working Environment/ Physical Activities Exertion of 50 pounds of force on a regular basis, and occasionally up to 100 pounds is required
  • Environment Work - Work is both indoors and outdoors
  • Physical Environment - Work can be at heights, or in cramped and confined spaces
  • Chemical Exposure - Exposure to rotating and moving machine components, pressurized vessels/plumbing, chemicals, high temperatures, electricity, and oil
  • Rotating on call work will be required
  • Weekend and overtime work with short notice
