Substance Treatment Counselor Graduate Student Intern

ARTS has openings for Substance Treatment Counselor Student Intern positions for the 2023 semesters

 The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus seeks Substance Use Treatment Counselor Student Internship candidates within the Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS) Adult Outpatient Program, with clinic locations in Denver, Aurora and Arvada. ARTS Adult Outpatient clinics provide drug and alcohol assessment, psychosocial and pharmacological treatment for adults. Programs in various clinic locations include traditional outpatient, intensive outpatient and may contain specialty services for clients referred by the criminal justice system, county departments of human services, and services for pregnant women, individuals who are HIV positive and gender responsive services.

 Examples of Work Performed

  • Under supervision, the student/intern provides individual, family and/or group therapy as indicated for a caseload of 10—25 clients with substance use or co-occurring disorder(s).
  • Under supervision, develops and maintains individualized treatment plans, progress notes, and thorough clinical records on each client.
  • Participates as a member of the treatment team in evaluating and planning for individual clients and the client population as a whole. Attends weekly case conference and at least one staff meeting per week.
  • Under supervision, evaluates clients for admission to outpatient substance use treatment and recommends alternative treatment as indicated
  • Maintains good working relationships with clinic staff and networking agencies
  • Participates in on-going weekly supervision with the ARTS Clinical Supervisor at a minimum of one hour per week, with additional supervision as required. Supervision includes review of audio and/or video tapes of some client sessions.\
  • Assists as necessary with telephone and walk-in reception, and urinalysis collection from patients of the same gender.
  • Participate in selected in-service training.
  • Maintain documentation in patient charts
  • Develop and carry out individualized treatment plans and case management duties as needed to meet the needs of clients
  • Coordinate care with ancillary care providers and external constituents
  • Performing related work as assigned or required 
  • This position primarily provides services to clients with a substance use disorder. Some positions have the opportunity to work closely with problem solving courts, the Veterans Affairs Administration, Social or Human Services, and other referral sources.
  • Most student intern positions work between 7-10 hours per week, up to a maximum of 25 hours per week.
  • Some positions may be morning shifts (6:00am-2:30pm) and others may be afternoon shifts (10:30am-7:00pm)

Pay and Benefits

  • The stipend for this position is $15.87 per hour.
  • This position is NOT eligible for overtime compensation.
  • This position is NOT eligible for benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of an associate's or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, human services, or another closely-related field; AND
  • Must be currently enrolled as a concentration or second-year student in a Master’s program in psychology, social work, counseling, human services, or another closely-related field.

  • Experience with therapeutic confrontation and structures.
  • Experience conducting individual and/or family counseling.
