Bioinformatics Scientist

IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory (ABiL) provides our clients with (i) innovative, cutting edge bioinformatics solutions to address a diverse set of experimental questions spanning a wide range of applications, (ii) software development to support clients' analytical needs, and (iii) workforce development training to quickly enable client staff to implement the novel solutions that we provide, as well as, to utilize existing bioinformatics tools and methods to address their research requirements. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc., and will be assigned to ABiL, located on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, 950 Atlantic Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30332 to support ABiL's mission.

SCOPE OF WORK
The Bioinformatics Scientist will provide bioinformatics support to the Applied Bioinformatics Laboratory (ABiL).
 
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Apply in-depth knowledge and expertise of bioinformatics to develop cutting edge bioinformatics solutions to a diverse set of experimental questions for a wide range of applications.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of tools and reference databases for genomic analysis of bacterial, human, animal, and/or environmental samples, among others.
  • Manage genome sequence files and databases, including uploads to NCBI or other similar sequence data banks.
  • Assist with developing standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses.
  • Consult with internal partners on genomic project planning and management.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise, and accurate reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.
  • Utilize knowledge in programming languages including, but not limited to, Python, Perl, R, and/or Java.
  • Travel to present scientific findings at annual scientific meetings and conferences as assigned by the Principal Investigator or to assist with training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in bioinformatics, or Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, computer science, computational biology mathematics or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and at least 24 semester hours in machine learning, statistics, bioinformatics, and/or informatics.

Required:
  • Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in R; relational database management systems; and standard Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Communication skills, including experience developing communication tools such as scientific manuscripts, presentations, and posters.
  • Excellent skills for preparing written documents and giving oral presentations.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to comfortably multi-task.
  • At least 1-2 years of prior experience in applying machine learning algorithms in the area of large-scale genomic problems; bacterial or human.
  • Strong demonstrable experience in programming languages and software packages; able to develop novel bioinformatics pipeline, distributable packages and modules.
  • Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable:
  • Experience working with a diverse interdisciplinary team.

Language Skills:
  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English

REQUIREMENT:
  • Must be United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
