Student Trainee (Engineer)

The Federal Railroad Administration Internship Program (FIP) is designed to provide interns an opportunity to broaden their perspectives on issues facing government. Interns will work throughout FRA and support management in coordinating, facilitating, and implementing activities within the office to which they are assigned; and be exposed to and participate in activities, innovations, and challenges facing the railroad industry. The appointments for this vacancy announcement will begin with the Fall of 2021 school year and will continue for a year. Internships may be extended up to the date that the student graduates.  
  • Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to grade level.
  • Participates with senior personnel in conducting non routine projects.
  • Performing assignments selected to develop skills and provide practical engineering experience to complement the professional curriculum to the applicable engineering series. Provides assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects and initiatives.
  • Uses computer/computer software such as information management programs, computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs.
  • Perform elementary tasks, assignments, operations, or procedures for portions of difficult studies and projects by application of basic theory and principles in the technical area of engineering.
  • Assists engineering personnel in the accumulation, preparation, and presentation of data. Gathers and compiles engineering data, using judgment and knowledge in selection from a variety of prescribed but non-standardized sources.
