Promotions & Social Media Director

There is only one KCSU Promotions Director Position available. You may have seen this posting twice because one is for work-study and one is non-work-study. Either applicant is acceptable

This job description serves as a description for all work to be completed by the
department as a whole. All work is the responsibility of the director, to be delegated to
assistants and volunteers as needed. Assistants should work directly with their directors
shortly after employment to understand which responsibilities seen here (and not here)
are theirs to complete. Assistants are welcome to delegate tasks to volunteers and
manage their performance with the consent of their director.

The Promotions Director is responsible for all promotional events, activities and content
at KCSU. The Promotions Director must be very creative and have a lot of new
measurable ideas to help enhance and promote KCSU’s image. This position reports to
the Station Manager.

Promotions supervises throughout year/assists in hiring process for:
Assistant Promotions Director, Video, Volunteers
Promotions’ Supervisors:
Station Manager, General Manager

Specific duties include:
●Maintain a 360 degree perspective of all facets of KCSU, and learn the
prioritization it takes, based on the KCSU image and mission statement to select
which content to promote, how often, and on which channels
●Strategically utilize promotional channels by picking the best medium for the
message. For example, Using the RADIO for all audio production promotion.
Making a video to promote a concert. Using Facebook for event promotion.
●Measure KCSU listenership growth and reach in the community, and update the
KCSU Reach documentation
●Work closely with Video to ensure promotional videos are being made to keep
our social media, YouTube, and web content fresh
●Communicate and share your workload with your assistant director and
volunteers
●Make sure DJs are hosting weekly ticket giveaways
●Communicating with contacts at local venues to acquire tickets for giveaways
and look for possible future events
●Create project charters, AKA road map of plans for large promotional events
●Measure success through project charters of events like the PreGame show or
other events to ensure goals are met/knowing what to do differently in the future
●Take staff requests, supervisor requests, and your own prioritization into account
when planning and running various promotional activities
●Coordinate all giveaway sheets and other appropriate documentation,
including the use of the KCSU publish drive
●Overseeing the distribution and monitoring of all promotional items, including
shirts, stickers, etc. Working with the development director as needed to share
promotional items.
●Organizing all content through KCSU’s various social media accounts, including
Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok and others
●Using supervisor help to ensure all KCSU staff and volunteers are filling out the
KCSU Promo Request form so you know to promote content BEFORE it happens
and on its release day
●Responds to listener social media comments and consults station manager and
general manager for proper public relations advice as needed
●Gather possible promotional events/ideas from other departments (like Sports,
News, Music and other RMSMC branches) about anything that may need to be
promoted
●Table and help create a street team to do live promotions
●Attends RMSMC marketing meetings upon request
●Make timeline of expected upcoming events to cover for semester
●Have full knowledge of all social media accounts and keeping a list of all and a
description of each for record keeping purposes
●Put together a Street Team to be present at events.
●Put on a few events per semester that further KCSU’s reach and spread.
●Work with the Web Content Editor and Web Director to write one (required) web
article per semester. Web article due dates are assigned by the Station
Manager.
●Work on specific tasks given to you from the Station Manager, General Manager
or Programming Director

All-Staff Responsibilities
All paid staff at KCSU have responsibilities that all staff must adhere to. Some of
these include:
1. Hold regular office hours during weekdays from 8am-6pm

2. Have regular sometimes daily correspondence with the Station Manager,
and General Manager through Slack, email, and in person

3. Have one on one meetings...
a. With station manager and general manager
b. With program director for content producers
c. With assistants/directors if applicable to department

4. Attend scheduled all-staff meetings

5. Have regular correspondence with your community (e.g. Local director
talking to the Fort Collins art community, Sports Director talking to the
CSU/Fort Collins high schools’ sports teams)

6. Can either answer any questions about KCSU, or if not be able to direct
whoever is asking to the correct person

7. Work with the Station Manager host additional shows during DJ-Athon to
ensure a full live schedule

8. Assist the Station Manager and Training Director with the Training Liaison of
the Week. The training liaison is a staff member, selected by the Station
Manager each week, who is called in to work with shadows that are
unable to book a show based on our current show schedule. Liaisons host
normal staff hours, but when called in to host a show can use office hours.

9. Apply for work study before starting your position. If work study is
unavailable, you must turn in the necessary paperwork within the first two
weeks of starting work

10. Accurately track your hours each week

11. Uphold the KCSU Mission statement and imaging principles in everything
they do.

12. Create and foster an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work
environment.

The mission of KCSU is to train students to collaboratively operate a radio station
that delivers and creates content that informs and inspires our listeners.

have any questions about the job description or any other matter.

The promotions director position is available. When you apply, please indicate in your
cover letter if you are interested in the director position. More information is available in
the Job Description document that holds the responsibilities of the position.
The promotions director works for a 30-week period for 15-hours a week. The position
pays minimum wage. $13 an hour.

All student management team applicants must be full-time (twelve or more
undergraduate hours or six or more graduate hours per semester), degree-seeking,
fee-paying Colorado State University students in good academic standing.

voluntarily train with their predecessor 2-hours at a minimum each week after they are
hired.

Promotions & Social Media Director Interview Questions
Read through and become familiar with these questions. You will be asked these
questions during your interview. There is no need to provide a written response, though
you are permitted to bring notes and visual/audio aids during your interview. Use these
questions and the job description to prepare you for the interview.

1. Why do you want to be a part of the promotions department at KCSU?

2. For which positions are you applying? Would you prefer assistant or director?
a. Would you be open to another position other than your preference for this
department?
b. Would you be open to another position outside of this department at
KCSU? (This is unusual but we always like to check.)

3. In your opinion, what does the promotions department add to KCSU? What are
the main goals we would seek to accomplish through the promotions
department?

4. The channels that KCSU uses to promote are always growing and changing from
radio live-reads to Tiktok. List off a few examples of KCSU promotional channels
and what content performs best on those channels.

5. KCSU broadcast signal can reach more than 300,000 in Fort Collins, Loveland,
and Greeley, making it the promotional channel with the largest potential
audience. What makes an effective radio promotion? What makes a bad radio
promotion? Describe types of radio promotions from other stations that you
appreciate and how you will implement their tactics at KCSU.

6. Using specific examples to describe how KCSU can improve the promotions
department and reach more people next year.

7. There are crucial recruitment periods at KCSU including the first week of school
and the week before each of KCSU’s training sessions. List specific examples of
how you will recruit during these times, and why you chose these examples.

8. Promotions can be stressful, how will you plan on delegating extra
work/promotional events to the assistant promotions director or volunteers?

9. Which part of promotions do you find the most intriguing for you? (Live events,
social media, fundraising, tabling)
