Description:
The primary role of this student for Summer 2022 will be supporting orientation for 10-20 hours per week.

The goal of this position is to serve as an active member of the Computer Science Advising Team and to assist incoming undergraduate students. This position will provide support to the Computer Science advisors in order to enhance the services provided by the Computer Science Undergraduate Advising Office.

This position requires a commitment of 80-100 hours during the summer, primarily during CSU Virtual Ram Orientation. Please see the required dates below. There will be a required pre-orientation training the week before orientation starts (May 31-June 4) that will be scheduled with the advising team.

This position is evaluated throughout the summer by an assigned Computer Science Advisor during one-on-one meetings held throughout orientation.



Qualifications:
§ Computer Science Major who is a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
§ Must have 3.0 GPA or higher
§ Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics and abilities: have a passion for Computer Science, can work both independently and collaboratively, a friendly and approachable demeanor, quick learner, active listener, organized, strong study skills, a dedicated work ethic, commitment to diversity and inclusion, enjoy assisting others, and skilled in communication and computer applications. Experience with Zoom. If you have experience which demonstrates these qualities, please list and support them within your application materials.

Responsible for the following (after receiving the appropriate training from the advisors)
§ Welcoming and providing support and resources to incoming students during orientation.
§ Providing quality customer service.
§ Assist transfer and 1st year Computer Science students in registering for Fall 2021 courses on RamWeb.
§ Providing guidance and mentorship to incoming Computer Science 1st year and transfer students.
§ Familiarity with the Degree Progress Reports (DARS) system and the ability to help students understand how to use this tool for academic planning.
§ Knowledge of--and the ability to disseminate information to students about-- departmental and university policies, opportunities and resources. Providing referrals to university resources as appropriate.
§ Acting as a representative of the CS Department and relaying appropriate student feedback, questions and concerns about the registration process and the CS Program to CS Advisors.
§ Encouraging students’ connection with faculty and CS programs and making appropriate referrals.
§ Promoting the Undergraduate Advising Office and Computer Science Department as a source of information and community.
§ Knowledge of organizational and study skills and ability to present skills to students.
§ Assisting in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the advising resources in the Undergraduate Advising Office.
§ Assisting with the development of surveys to assess student interest.
§ Developing summer engagement activities for incoming students.
§ Other duties as assigned.
If the position continues, the student would continue to support the advising team with admissions and outreach programming.
