The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking an Environmental Scientist with in-depth knowledge of policies, procedures, data and tools designed to protect California’s biological diversity through conservation planning in partnership with other State, local and Federal agencies, private landowners, and other stakeholders.
 
The headquarters office building is located in West Sacramento with free parking. This position is on emergency telework during the COVID 19 pandemic. Partial telework may to be an option after the Department returns to in-office work. Eventually you may have to travel for business purpose and need including, but not limited to, attending meetings, site visits, hearings, and statewide to complete work assignments. Ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day.

This assignment typically includes developing partnerships, identifying priority focus areas for planning, providing scientific and policy guidance, identifying and developing needed conservation planning tools, and assisting and training regional staff. A high degree of personal initiative and critical thought is expected. Public contacts made in the course of this work are sensitive and involve a wide variety of special interest groups.

Primary duties include (see duty statement in the job posting for detailed information):
 
  • Participate as a member of a team of conservation planners responsible for collaborating with others to facilitate planning and implementation of the Landscape Conservation Planning Program (LCPP) components, including Natural Community Conservation Planning, Conservation and Mitigation Banking, Regional Conservation Investment Strategies, and Conservation Land Acquisitions.
  • Coordinate with Department and other biologists to gather specific information about species, habitats, ecological processes, climate change, and conservation strategies and provide the information to planning efforts.
  • Foster partnerships, particularly with federal wildlife agencies.
  • Provide support to the LCPP functions, including updating and maintaining databases and webpages, and conducting miscellaneous research tasks.
  • Draft, review, and make recommendations regarding plans, laws, regulations, conservation guidelines and complex policies/procedures in relation to ecosystem and biodiversity conservation planning.
  • Assist in the identification and coordination of regional and statewide conservation priorities including research priorities, species and land protection strategies, and stewardship arrangements to support planning and adaptive implementation efforts.
  • Assist in assessing program effectiveness and develop outreach and training materials.
  • Assist in preparing concept papers, budget change proposals, and bill analyses and participate in long-term strategic planning for the program.
