Intern - Future of Research for Climate, Earth, and Energy (FORCEE) - Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Grid Modernization - RD Graduate Summer

We are seeking motivated graduate students in STEM to partner with Sandia research staff for solving critical problems in the Engineering Sciences to support Sandia’s unifying mission of delivering technical solutions for emergent national threats caused by climate change and global nuclear proliferation. As needed by specific scientific needs of the particular projects within this research portfolio, students will be called upon to apply their skills in computer programming, machine learning, hands-on data collection and reduction, and integrated multi-physics simulation environments. Students will work collaboratively over the course of the internship with a mentor and affiliated team members to deliver high-impact results ultimately suitable for publication in leading technical journals and conferences. In addition to nurturing the development of analytical acumen, the FORCEE internship program also emphasizes students’ growth in communication and teamwork through their work in naturally cross-disciplinary teams. Lastly, students will be exposed to other program areas and facilities across the lab through organized tours, presentations and guest lectureships, to enhance their understanding of how their particular research activities support Sandia’s overarching mission of delivering “exceptional service in the national interest.”
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Analyze electric power transmission and distribution systems
  • Design of protection systems for grids with high penetrations of renewable energy
  • Develop new optimization algorithms to improve the resilience of the electric power to natural and man-made threats
  • Develop new control algorithms to improve grid stability with high penetrations of renewable energy
  • Analyze electricity market data to identify potential value streams for energy storage
  • Investigate behind-the-meter applications for energy storage and contribute to energy storage case studies
  • Develop python code for an open source energy storage valuation tool
  • Develop new techniques for evaluating transmission planning scenarios that include energy storage and large penetrations of renewable generation
  • Design power electronics to interface to different energy storage technologies
Sandia demonstrates its commitment to public safety in the national interest by requiring that all new hires be fully vaccinated or have an approved medical or religious accommodation before commencing employment. The requirement also applies to those who are telecommuting and working virtually.
Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700.
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Department Description:
The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Grid Modernization team at Sandia is an interdisciplinary collection of researchers in engineering, physics, chemistry, geoscience, computer science and applied mathematics united by anticipating and delivering technical solutions to emergent challenges impacting the United States’ past, present and future energy needs. Specifically, we solve problems in the fundamental sciences with application to fossil, nuclear and renewable energy systems, along with power distribution analysis and battery design. The department works closely with a number of departments across Sandia in materials sciences, power sources, electrical sciences, fire science, power systems, renewables and grid integration. We also have active collaborations with many stakeholders in the electricity industry including electric utilities, product developers, universities and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in the electricity infrastructure. In addition, the department manages several activities for the DOE related to the deployment and demonstration of new energy storage projects, including the development of methods and tools to evaluate the performance of storage systems, and methods for the optimal utilization of energy storage assets.

Security Clearance:
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
EEO Statement:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
