Intern - Future of Research for Climate, Earth, and Energy (FORCEE) - Climate Science and National Security - Technical Graduate Summer

We are seeking motivated Technical Graduate students in STEM to join our dynamic team! You will partner with Sandia research staff for solving critical problems in the Earth Sciences to support Sandia’s unifying mission of delivering technical solutions for emergent national threats caused by climate change and global nuclear proliferation.
You may be called, on any given day:
  • Address specific scientific needs of the particular projects within this research portfolio, students will be called upon to apply their skills in computer programming, machine learning, hands-on data collection and reduction, and integrated multi-physics simulation environments.
  • Students will work collaboratively over the course of the internship with a mentor and affiliated team members to deliver high-impact results ultimately suitable for publication in leading technical journals and conferences.
  • In addition to nurturing the development of analytical acumen, the FORCEE (Future of Research for Climate, Earth, and Energy) internship program also emphasizes students’ growth in communication and teamwork through their work in naturally cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Lastly, students will be exposed to other program areas and facilities across the lab through organized tours, presentations and guest lectureships, to enhance their understanding of how their particular research activities support Sandia’s overarching mission of delivering “exceptional service in the national interest.”

Required:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in a related accredited graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.
Desired:
  • Current GRADUATE enrollment in an accredited STEM program at a U.S. (or qualifying territories) university
  • Written and oral proficiency in English
  • B.S. in mathematics, physics, earth sciences, computer science, or a related area
  • Enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. program in mathematics, physics, earth sciences, computer science, or a related area
  • Exceptional written, oral and visual communication skills
  • Proficiency with modern computer languages (e.g. PYTHON, R, MATLAB, C/C++, FORTRAN-XX, MPI, Jupyter, etc.)
  • Experience with modular computer software development practices
  • Experience with laboratory and/or field procedures and protocols
  • Research documentation with laboratory notebooks or similar archival methods
  • Machine learning analysis

The Climate Science and National Security team at Sandia is an interdisciplinary collection of researchers in engineering, physics, chemistry, geoscience, computer science and applied mathematics united by anticipating and delivering technical solutions to emergent challenges impacting the United States’ global security posture. Specifically, we solve problems in the fundamental sciences with application to climate change assessment, global-scale situational awareness, subsurface characterization, infrastructure resiliency, and fossil/renewable energy systems. Security Clearance:
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
