Under general supervision of the site supervisor, provides culturally competent nursing services, patient education, and counseling for individuals in public health clinics for the WIC, Immunization, and Preventive Health programs. Provides nursing care per agency policies/procedures, standing medical orders, and patient specific medical orders. Provides quality customer service and maintains strict confidentiality while providing services within agency/program policies/procedures. 
 
  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess the health of clients including determining vaccine eligibility; provision of immunizations; provision of required/recommended vaccine counseling including needed appointments; refer as indicated for precautions and/or contraindications.; referrals; VAERS; Vaccine Management including Disaster Recovery Plan; storage and handling of vaccines; inventory and ordering of vaccines.
  • Within established guidelines, obtains patient data through observation and interviews/history; provides nursing care per established plan of care and/or policies/procedures. Provides WIC certifications according to agency policies/procedures to include health history, anthropometrics, immunization screening, hemoglobin, evaluation of risk status, nutrition and health counseling, prescription of WIC food package, documentation, and high-risk referrals. Documents care provided in accordance with agency policies/procedures. Promotes breastfeeding and support activities as instructed. Issues and monitors breastfeeding supplies as requested. Conducts and evaluates group nutrition education for WIC participants following the facilitated learning process.
  • Collects laboratory specimens, performs lab testing and conducts screening procedures such as Hct/Hgb., blood pressure, etc. according to established standards.
  • Provides follow-up as indicated to include teens; abnormal pap smear; and STI treatment. 
  • Participates in emergency preparedness activities and other duties as assigned.  

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements: Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Some positions require a valid driver's license and/or certification in Basic Life Support. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. 

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

 Agency Additional Requirements: Associate degree in Nursing and current licensure as a  Registered Nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina or a compact state.

  • Ability to function as a team member.
  • Ability to provide individual health teaching and counseling.

Must have current driver's license or ability to obtain transportation. May be required to use personal vehicle. CPR certification within first 6 months and then as required. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and stand for long periods. May be required to work evenings (after 5pm) and/or Saturday clinics. May have to travel to other sites.  

Preferred Qualifications
One (1) year of nursing experience preferred.
