Anthropology and Geography Trunk Show Work Study

 
POSITION DESCRIPTION: A student employee will collaborate with staff and faculty in the Department of Anthropology and Geography to prepare, develop, plan, and present educational activities and materials about our concentrations for K-12 groups in addition to prospective and admitted students. Student employee will also be asked to help with additional departmental administrative and communications projects and tasks. Candidates should have strong writing, speaking and communications skills and be comfortable engaging with a range of audiences. Student employee in this position will be expected to work an average of 10 hours per week, with flexibility based on student schedule and Trunk Show events. Student will determine weekly schedule with supervisor.   
 
PROJECT BACKGROUND: The Anthropology and Geography Trunk Show seeks to (1) communicate the applied aspects of our disciplines for student (K-12) audiences and (2) articulate career options to current and prospective students in our department. This includes outreach, educational activities, recruitment, and communications that emphasize the range of job possibilities in anthropology and geography that do not require an MA or PhD. Key components of these objectives are to better engage with students from under-represented and under-served populations at CSU and beyond, and generally build and further relationships with prospective majors and minors. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Trunk Show Student Employee will assist with: 
  • preparing presentation materials about concentrations for K-12 groups, including high school students, and admitted student visits 
  • creating a contact list and identifying outreach opportunities with schools, camps, service organizations, and other groups 
  • arranging and participating in at least five (target) Trunk Show programs or other local high-school student outreach and recruitment events on and off campus through 2022-2023 academic year 
  • researching funding opportunities for future Anthropology and Geography Trunk Show projects 
  • coordinating and communicating with department student clubs and other organizations regarding volunteer and other opportunities 
  • developing content and copy for print materials, web, and social media, including promoting events 
  • working with staff and Career Center on career-oriented panels and events for current students 
  • developing materials and activities for recruitment and campus visits 
  • assisting with data collection for project evaluations 
  • supporting department office management and communications  
 
Student employee may choose to use this work opportunity and project as a basis for final capstone project and/or Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Creativity presentation. 
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Work-study eligibility 
  • GPA 3.0 or higher 
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills 
  • Able to work towards deadlines & collaborate with others 
  • Able to participate in public events such as campus field trips, school visits, science fairs, etc. which may include occasional evenings or weekends  
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
  • Anthropology and Geography major or minor  
  • Junior or Senior standing 
  • Competence/ familiarity with social media 
  • Spanish-language proficiency or competency 
 
PAY: 
$12.56 per hour, up to $4500 for the academic year; work hours averaging 10 per week
