ERLC - Peer Mentor, 2023-2024

The goal of the Engineering Residential Learning Community (ERLC) is to assist students with the development of their professional Engineering identity by helping them establish relationships in community with other engineers, by supporting their academic and social development, as well as helping them to practice good citizenship within the ERLC and greater campus community.

 

An intentionally designed living-learning program developed to support and assist Engineering students with their transition to the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, as well as their overall transition to Colorado State University. The ERLC consists of students living in Academic Village – Engineering Hall. 

 

Peer Mentors serve as core figures in the ERLC community providing resources to help residents find support in their transition to CSU. They accomplish this through creating touchpoints with residents to learn how they are doing, what common trends in the hall are, and where they can aid residents based on the hall’s state of being. Other areas of support that Peer Mentors concretely provide are connecting students with campus resources, demonstrating positive academic habits, and encouraging students to connect with and get involved on campus.

 

Overall, the Mentors’ purpose is to model high ethical standards and positive academic and social behaviors, and to act as a resource for students as they navigate their success as citizens and engineers at CSU and beyond.

·      Establishing community amongst ERLC residents in partnership with ERLC staff and RA staff

·      Providing resources to residents of the ERLC including but not limited to: tutoring options, mental health education, major of interest: point of contact, mentorship

·      Work with other Mentors and Graduate Academic Coaches (GAC) to plan and facilitate one group program and one individual program per semester

o  Program quantity and scale vary depending on ERLC student population

·      Establish trust with residents through routine interactions such as: hall dinners, tutoring sessions, casual game nights, 1:1 conversations, etc.

 

·      Attend required trainings (Fall Training in August, Spring Training in January, and other required professional development events)

·      Attend required meetings (floor meetings with RA, Mentor staff meetings every other week)

·      Attend monthly one-on-one meetings with the Academic Support Coordinator

·      Complete weekly Mentor Report form regarding resident interactions, etc.

·      Support and attend additional Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering sponsored programs and events including:

o  Move-In and Ram Welcome 

o  Meet & Greet events 

o  Visit Days 

o  Residential Learning Community Fairs 

o  Engineering Exploration Day 

o  Engineering Major Exploration Fair

·      Maintain appropriate student confidentiality and refer/share student concerns with RAs and/or the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering Staff as appropriate

Required Qualifications:       

This position is open to all Colorado State University students who:

·      are currently enrolled, full-time Engineering or Undeclared Engineering Interest students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.

·      have attended Colorado State University for at least one academic year.

·      have a great work ethic and interest in learning and growing as a student and as a leader.

·      demonstrate high levels of self-awareness.

·      are able to demonstrate knowledge and a willingness to learn regarding diversity-related issues.

·      interact well with a wide variety of individuals and groups.

·      are willing to work 4-5 hours per week and commit for the entire academic year.

 

Preferred Qualifications:       

This position will strongly benefit from an applicant who:

·     has experience living on campus and/or has experience living within the ERLC

·     has a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above

·     has previous leadership, event programming/planning, mentoring and/or tutoring experience

·     Gain valuable leadership experience to build your professional resume

·     Make a difference in the lives of others by assisting incoming students with their transition to CSU

·     Opportunity to plan and implement academic and social programming that has a direct impact on your living community

·     Hourly wage of $15.00

Please note that only Engineering majors should apply for this position due to the specific nature of the position and the population of students served within the ERLC.
