Graduate Academic Coach (GAC) Position Description
2023-2024
 
The goal of the Engineering Residential Learning Community (ERLC) is to assist students with the development of their professional Engineering identity by helping them establish relationships in community with other engineers, by supporting their academic and social development, as well as helping them to practice good citizenship within the ERLC and greater campus community.
 
What is a Graduate Academic Coach (GAC)?
The purpose of the Graduate Academic Coach (GAC) position is to assist ERLC and Residence Life staff and facilitate student success. An ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, a passion for helping students be successful, experience working with diverse student populations, as well as experience with or an interest in STEM. 
 
GACs will help first-year students to successfully navigate their first year of college in an effort to enhance their academic and social integration into Colorado State University. GACs maintain a dual-report supervision structure and report directly to their main department, as well as to the WSCOE’s Office of Academic and Student Affairs Office.
 
Job Duties
GACs assist students in the following areas:
·     Establishing and maintaining positive daily routines and habits
·     Avoiding procrastination and set goals and priorities
·     Providing referrals to campus resources
·     Developing time-management strategies
·     Organizing and keeping track of class materials
·     Taking and utilizing class notes more efficiently
·     Increasing active reading and learning skills
·     Enhancing study skills
·     Developing test taking strategies and alleviating test anxiety
·     Development of self-advocacy skills
·     Development of connections with faculty and staff within the WSCOE
 
Primary Responsibilities include:
·     Participating in preliminary and on-going academic coaching training sessions
·     Creating and facilitating workshops/programs on key topics related to student success
·     Attend ERLC/Residence Life staff meetings as a means of collaboration and supporting students from a holistic perspective
·     Assisting in the training of ERLC Peer Mentors
·     Assisting the WSCOE Academic Success Coordinator with student and program assessment and follow up
·     Communicating student concerns and issues to supervisors
·     Assisting with the promotion of ERLC programming and academic coaching support services
·     Data entry for academic coaching participants
·     Participate in the ERLC Fall Training and aid in leading the ERLC Winter Retreat
·     Completion of other duties as assigned
 
Additional Expectations:
·     Attend bi-weekly staff meetings (one meeting with GAC’s and their supervisor and one led by GAC’s with Peer Mentors)
·     Create and implement 1-2 large-scale programs alongside Peer Mentor Staff
·     Submitting weekly/monthly reports on students’ progress
·     Fulfill leadership responsibilities in one of 3 areas:
o  Tutor Program Manager: strategize and implement initiatives alongside ASC to empower the ERLC tutoring team to best succeed; includes checking in on tutoring sessions, serving as a logistical point of contact for tutoring team, and aiding in the curriculum creation in team meetings
o  Residential Outreach Manager: Serve as a liaison between the ERLC team and the ERLC community; includes attending bi-weekly RA staff meetings and serving as a point of contact with RA staff, strategizing outreach to residents of the ERLC with Peer Mentors and RA staff, ensuring that GAC’s are connected with the community and are actively serving as resources for all residents
o  Peer Mentor Advisor: serve as a support system for the ERLC’s Peer Mentors in their programmatic, communal, and personal development. This role will include having 1:1 conversations with the Peer Mentors, developing programming plans, and advising them in community development initiatives
 
Required Qualifications
·     Successful admission and acceptance into a graduate program at Colorado State University
·     Interest and knowledge in student development and issues related to student retention
·     Ability to utilize concepts of student development in program planning, academic coaching, advising, and administrative duties or ability to learn concepts quickly
·     Detail-oriented
·     Excellent computer, written and oral communication skills
·     Proven organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills
·     Ability to build rapport and connect with students, faculty, and staff
 
Preferred Qualifications
·     Graduate student in the Walter Scott, Jr., College of Engineering
·     Prior mentoring or academic coaching experience
·     Experience with various database systems
·     Knowledge of the requirements for Student Academic Progress (SAP) satisfaction
·     Knowledge of campus resources available to assist students
·     STEM background or experience working with STEM students/programs
·     Demonstrated ability to manage and balance academics and work responsibilities
 
Terms of Employment
·     Average of 4-6 hours worked per week
·     Minimum of one year appointment (unless otherwise discussed with supervisor)
·     Must be a graduate student in good academic standing at Colorado State University (enrolled in at least 9 hours each long semester)
·     All candidates must be accepted into their program and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher
 
Remuneration
·     1-bedroom apartment within the ERLC (AV – Engineering) for subsidized cost ($500/month)
