Please note: this position is paid on an hourly basis and limited to 1500 hours per calendar year. The salary range for Student Assistant (E&A) is $15.68 - $24.17 per hour.

The Central Coast Water Board has an opening for Student Assistant in the Site Cleanup Program. The position is located at 895 Aerovista Place, San Luis Obispo, California, near vineyards, outdoor hiking, and ocean access.

Under close supervision of a Senior Engineering Geologist and consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments. Assignments will also involve learning and applying knowledge of environmental and civil engineering principles relating to site investigation and remediation.

The Student Assistant will:
Enter water quality information regarding land, groundwater, and/or surface water discharges into State Water Resources Control Board’s (State Board) databases, such as GeoTracker and California Water Integrated Quality System. Scans records for upload to databases.

Assist with developing and responding to land, groundwater, and surface water permit applications. Assist with permit development, review, and response. Compile data for table preparation, prepare drafts of permits for waste discharge (for review by supervisors), and cost estimation letters for the cost recovery program. Prepare agency correspondence and input tracking report status in databases.

Applies environmental engineering knowledge to compare technical data in the reports to US Environmental Protection Agency standards, Basin Plan standards, and/or other standards. Assist technical staff in preparing documenting and creating correspondence associated with potential permit non-compliance issues using technical and other data.

Track receipt of electronic reports and enter violations, such as late report submittals, into the State Board database. Prepare mass informational mailing notices and distribute technical water quality documents. Assist in both hard copy and electronic file inventory and maintenance.

Assist in preparing Board presentations and accompany staff on occasional field inspections to assess compliance with land and surface water permits.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.
