Job Description:
The Planetary Science Institute (PSI) is seeking an artist to illustrate a graphic novel about a small telescope used to do big science exploring Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io. Illustrations will include anthropomorphized telescopes, spacecraft, a variety of space and planetary scenes, and lettering work. A near-final draft of the story will be provided, with edits being made as needed to better partner with art. The resulting book will be provided online under a creative commons license, and will be distributed in paper in limited numbers, with the artist’s name appearing on all renderings.
Note: Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.
The skills, knowledge, and minimum qualifications required for this position are as follows:
· Excellent illustration skills in Procreate or Adobe Suite
· Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign
· Familiarity with comic book / graphic novel layout and design
· Excellent online communication skills
· Familiarity with Slack or Discord
The skills and experience preferred for this position are as follows:
· Experience doing layout in InDesign for a job or club that did collaborative work with firm deadlines (such as a student newspaper, yearbook, or illustrated newsletter).
· Experience doing science- or science fiction-related illustrations (fan-fiction art qualifies).
