LA Sanitation & Environment (LASAN) is hiring an Environmental Specialist to support the Biodiversity and Healthy Soils Programs! (other Environmental Specialist positions are also available at LASAN - applicants will be considered for all vacancies)

DESCRIPTION:
This position will provide technical support to LASAN’s Biodiversity and Healthy Soils Programs. This position will assist the City in meeting the biodiversity and healthy soils goals in the Mayor’s Green New Deal. This work will include extensive interaction with the experts, other City departments, and external stakeholders. This individual will also support grant-funded projects to improve the LA City Biodiversity Index score and to achieve many of the objectives outlined in the City’s Healthy Soils Strategy.

DUTIES:
  • Research outside funding opportunities to protect biodiversity, increase equitable access to nature, and raise public awareness of LA’s biodiversity;
  • Prepare maps, presentations, reports, feasibility studies, and documents;
  • Coordinate with biodiversity experts and staff to design, implement, execute, and monitor projects to restore habitat, enhance wildlife connectivity, aid species-specific recoveries, and build resilience;
  • Give presentations at public meetings, conferences, and events;
  • Coordinate annual events (e.g., LA Bioblitz Challenge) to engage the general public and promote community science;
  • Coordinate with other City departments to launch public awareness campaigns;
  • Analyze data, perform spatial analysis, and write technical reports;
  • Facilitate meetings with experts on soil health and with staff across City departments to better develop and implement healthy soils practices and institutionalize aspects of the City’s Healthy Soils Strategy Document.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Four year degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or related field;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to handle situations tactfully and diplomatically;
  • Good organizational skills to manage numerous projects and prioritize work;
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and mapping software (GIS).
