IMPEL Research Pubs Student Assistant

Berkeley Lab’s Incubating Market-Propelled Entrepreneurial (IMPEL) team is looking for a highly motivated, technically proficient, and resourceful Student Assistant who is seeking experience and exposure to the Building Technology Division’s unique IMPEL program. IMPEL helps early entrepreneurs commercialize innovative technologies.

Reporting to IMPEL’s Program Manager, and guided by the entire IMPEL team, explore what role the DOE & National Labs can play to address market barriers for building decarbonization technologies, what has been accomplished and learned to date, and ways to continue breaking market barriers. Additionally, develop research experience by contributing to a DOE publication.

• Position: This is a part-time, hourly paid, 6 month student appointment with the possibility of renewal based on performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
• Hours: This position can operate up to 20 hours per week during the academic school year. Hours must be worked within standard business hours (M-F 8am to 5pm).
• Location: Hybrid preferred, with flexibility for remote or fully onsite at Berkeley Lab depending on student’s location. This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
• Salary: Salary for this position is predetermined based on student step rates. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s relevant education and is set based on year within graduate program.
  • Undergraduate
    • Year 1 (Freshman) = $16.99 hourly
    • Year 2-3 (Sophomore & Junior) = $18.72 hourly
    • Year 4 (Senior) = $22.02 hourly
  • Graduate: $29.37- $42.65 hourly

What You Will Do:

• Assist IMPEL team with literature review. Understand, and summarize learnings from literature and case studies as identified by the team, then find more as needed and relevant to the course of research.
• Assist team with reviewing and providing input on the key stakeholder interviews and survey questions and methodologies to ensure the right questions are being asked, and that they are clear.
• Assist team with identifying relevant and potential startups, investors and clean energy technical experts outside of the IMPEL network for interviews and surveys.
• Potentially help conduct preliminary interviews and surveys, and synthesize early learnings.
• Incorporate learnings from literature review, case studies, interviews, and surveys into a detailed outline.
• Potentially write sections and poster presentations of an early draft.

Related Background and Skills:

• Experience in program and policy research, analysis, research paper development, energy efficiency, building technology, entrepreneurship programs, technology commercialization.
• Academic majors applicable to the projects: Policy analysis, public affairs, management, business, marketing, political science, architecture, environmental science.
