Research Assistant - Heart Disease Prevention Program
Job Description
The Human Performance Clinical Research Lab (HPCRL), designated as a CSU Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence since 2008, supports the departmental mission to discover new knowledge through excellence in research in the areas of health and exercise science and to disseminate that knowledge through academic and outreach programs. Housed in the HPCRL, the Heart Disease Prevention Program (HDPP) conducts heart health assessments. The program has been successfully implemented in fire and law enforcement agencies across the state and is a valuable service to support the health and wellness of firefighters and law enforcement officials.
The HDPP has a subcontract as a part of the Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study (FCCS) – Wildland Arm. This position is completely funded by the FCCS and is limited to the study duration and funding availability. The position is for one year.
- Seeking a self motivate, multi tasking, organized student employee who can demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
- Will work between 15 and 20 hours a week, must be available M-F
- Must be willing and able to work fall and spring semester
Job Responsibilities
- Obtain and maintain appropriate certifications related to research including:
- First Aid/CPR/AED
- CITI training as appropriate for research activities
- Hazardous materials training for biohazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens
- Other training as appropriate for responsibilities
- Recruit, obtain informed consent and follow research subjects through research protocols
- Perform duties related to research recruitment and data collection including:
- Preparation of materials for data collection including inventory of supplies
- Proper consent
- Supervising subjects while they complete surveys including online and hard copy formats
- Appropriately labeling and tracking samples
- Using appropriate personal protective equipment for blood and urine collection
- Collection of blood and urine samples
- Preparation of samples for shipping
- Retrieval of samples from study locations and shipping to study partners
- Travel to various sites in Colorado, Wyoming and possibly other states required with some overnight trips
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills
- High level of motivation, problem solving and ability to self-learn in a new environment PA, CT/PS, SR
- Superior work ethic, communication, as well as intellectual independence PA, DP, CT/PS
- Demonstrated ability to work in diverse settings and communicate effectively TW, V/WC
- Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite DP
- Effective verbal communication and listening skills V/WC
Preferred Skills
- Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds TW, GC,
- Experience that demonstrates problem solving skills, critical thinking and work independently with minimal supervision CT/PS, SR, PA
- Experience that demonstrates ability to effectively manage several projects simultaneously PA, CT/PS
- Experience in emergency services CD
- Experience with performing phlebotomy CD
Hourly Pay Rate: $30-$40/hr
