
Undergrad Lab Research Assistant
Job Description
Students will assist with various activities in the Food Safety/Microbiology and Food Chemistry laboratories of the Department of Animal Sciences. Duties will include (but are not limited to) preparation of bacteriological media and solutions; organizing and taking inventory of laboratory supplies; cleaning of glassware, laboratory benches, and floors; and assisting graduate students with research. Please note this is an in-person job. A virtual option is not available.
This won’t be a position where there will be 20 hours of work every week but will ebb and flow with the need for research help.
Job Responsibilities/Duties
- Preparation of bacteriological culture media and solutions
- Organizing and taking inventory of laboratory supplies, culture media, and chemicals
- Autoclaving and disposal of laboratory trash
- Laboratory glassware cleaning
- Cleaning of laboratory benches and equipment
- Vacuuming and mopping of laboratory floors
- Assisting graduate students with research
- Running chemical assays
- Data entry
Required Skills
- Must be able to follow the strict safety-related rules and procedures of the laboratories at all times, including wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Able to stand for extended periods of time while performing certain tasks/activities
- Able to follow written and oral instructions
- Must be reliable in terms of showing up to work as scheduled
Preferred Qualifications
- Working towards a B.S. in a relevant science-related major (e.g., Animal Sciences, Microbiology, Biology)
- Availability to work over weekends and holiday breaks based on research needs
Number of Openings: 4-6 depending on work hour availability
Hourly Pay Rate: Pay Range: $16.00/hour. The number of work hours will depend on on-going research activities. This position does not guarantee a fixed amount of work hours every week.

Required trainings: Before beginning their lab responsibilities, student employees will need to complete required online training modules mandated by CSU. Subsequently, on-site training will be provided. All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) will be supplied to student employees.
