
Laboratory Support - Tissue Trimming Laboratory Section
Position overview:
Colorado State University Clinical Diagnostics Laboratories is seeking a motivated, detail oriented, and dedicated individual to join our Tissue Trimming team. The ideal candidate will be willing to serve client, faculty, and student needs and have a desire to investigate the discipline of veterinary pathology. The Tissue Trimming section processes and prepares tissue specimens for anatomical pathology diagnoses. Hours are flexible within the standard workweek of Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. We are looking for a commitment of 15 hours per week. Work study students are encouraged to apply but a work study award is not required.
Typical tasks assigned:
Receive and prepare biopsied samples for formalin fixed histological analysis:
Assign pathologist to each case by using the assignment notebook and by acknowledging any client request for specific pathologist. Assign correct number of cassettes to be printed. Print cassettes with the correlating color code for each biopsy type. Print barcode sticker from LIMS system for trim note sheets. Decisions are made for each case on how to trim specimen(s) for best diagnosis by pathologist. Specimens will be grossed in and notes will include tissue types, margin cuts, dyes, and drawings when necessary. Note any special steps taken to prepare biopsies and provide to histology lab.
Disposal of fixed, frozen, and fresh tissues:
Routinely dispose of formalin fixed specimens. Maintain knowledge of proper steps taken to dispose of fixed tissue and formalin waste. Know and perform logging of frozen tissues and the disposal of these tissues. Maintain a clean lab atmosphere, this includes cleaning counters, floors and trash removal.
Mixing formalin concentrate:
Mix formalin concentrate to 10% NBF for lab use. Transfer any fresh tissue specimens into formalin for fixation.
Stocking and additional duties as needed:
Fill various sized containers with formalin to maintain stocks in the formalin cabinet that is available to the Diagnostic lab and Veterinary Hospital staff. Additional duties may include but are not limited to handling and logging of fresh tissues and moving these to appropriate storage.
