Engineering Summer Programs Mentors will help in the organization, preparation, and facilitation of summer engineering programs run through the Walter Scott Jr., College of Engineering. 

Breakdown of 8-week Summer Programming:

  • Tuesday May 28th, 2024 – Friday May 31st, 2024: Mandatory Training Week
  • Sunday June 2nd, 2024 – Thursday June 6th, 2024: ENvision Engineering Summer Program
  • Break (Friday June 7th – Tuesday June 11th, 2024)
  • Wednesday June 12th – Friday June 14th, 2024: Prepare for Engineering Programs
  • Monday June 17th – Friday June 21st, 2024: Engineering Your World Middle School Program
  • Monday June 24th – Friday June 28th, 2024: Creating Your World Middle School Program
  • Break (Monday July 1st – Friday July 5th, 2024)
  • Monday July 8th – Friday July 12th, 2024: Designing Your World High School Program
  • Monday July 15th – Friday July 19th, 2024: SPUR Engineering Camp 1
  • Monday July 22nd – Friday July 26th, 2024: SPUR Engineering Camp 2

ENvision Program Description (Age 16- 18): The ENvision Engineering Summer Program is a collaboration with Campos Engineering, Procurement, and Construction, LLC (Campos EPC, LLC) and hosted in-person at Colorado State University (CSU). A five-day overnight residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors from across the country. Participants partake in hands-on engineering learning sessions led by current students & faculty of the Walter Scott Jr. College of Engineering while also exploring life as an engineering student at Colorado State University. Students will be assigned to mentors who will assist in various capacities such as leading team building, building community within cohorts, guiding participants around campus, and facilitating workshops around engineering.

Engineering Middle School & High School Summer Programs: 

Engineering Your World Description: (Age 12-14) Students will discover solutions to engineering challenges by exploring five disciplines: mechanical, electrical, civil, biomedical, and chemical engineering through ten hands-on activities designed to simulate a collaborative lab environment and spark the imagination.

Creating Your World Description: (Age 12-14) This advanced summer program is for students who have previously completed the first summer program (Engineering Your World) or students with advanced knowledge in STEM. Students will build upon their understanding of STEM by completing projects focused on solving real-world engineering challenges.

Designing Your World Description: (Age 14-16) During a week-long interactive summer program on the CSU campus, high school students (Freshman & Sophomores) will participate in activities that will introduce them to the possibilities of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Students will utilize many of CSU’s state-of-the-art mechanical engineering laboratories, including its 3-D printing facility, mechatronics lab, and machine shop to create their designs. 

Mentors will help facilitate activities in these programs such as, but not limited to building a saltwater circuit, designing, and building a swamp cooler, Mars rover egg-lander, and artificial bicep; creating, constructing, and testing the strength of a bridge made of spaghetti, prosthetic leg, and clay boat; testing and analyzing sunscreen; creating slime. Mentors will lead participants on tours through the different engineering lab spaces on campus, while fostering community and support through these weeklong programs. Mentors will have transportation assistance to and from the Denver SPUR Campus during the weeks of SPUR programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend all scheduled trainings for program preparation from Tuesday May 28th – Friday May 31st
  • Attend the full subsequent program; Flexible scheduling offered for summer class schedule.
  • Program sessions will be hosted by mentors, community members and CSU faculty. Mentors may be called on by other session facilitators to assist or help students navigate activities.
  • Mentors will lead small and large group discussions among mentees that incorporate academic and social content.
  • Attend meetings after program sessions with peers to ensure that mentors and students are all contributing to community care.
  • Follow CSU’s protection of minor’s policy by staying in residence hall overnight with participants (lodging and meals provided during ENvision Summer Program). Mentors must stay on-campus in the residence hall the week of the ENvision Summer Program.
  • CPR & First Aid Training will be provided to all staff

Requirements:

  • 2.5 or above GPA
  • Priority given to WSCOE Undergraduate Major; open to all STEM majors
  • Preferred valid drivers license
  • Interest in working with historically excluded populations.
  • Initiative to facilitate small group discussion with high school & middle school student mentees in small groups.
  • Availability to fully participate in training and program dates.
  • Some experience with working in previous mentorship positions
  • Some experience in working in education outreach with K-12 school programs.
  • Commitment to inclusive excellence and willingness to work towards providing inclusive spaces.
  • Willingness to assist and facilitate academic and social interaction sessions.
