Natural Resources Technician Intern

5625 Myrtle Grove Rd., La Plata, MD 20646 (Charles County)

Main Purpose Of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist with seasonal land management projects on Wildlife Management Areas in the Southern Region. Projects may include creating and maintaining wildlife food plots, maintaining the Myrtle Grove WMA shooting range, resident Canada goose banding, mourning dove banding, wildlife surveys, habitat mowing, parking area maintenance, invasive plant management, and water level maintenance. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule including early start times and work in extreme conditions including heat, humidity, rain and/or in the presence of biting insects.

The internship runs 11 weeks between June and August. The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicant must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level.
  • A GPA of 2.5 or above.
  • Seeking a degree in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Botany, Wildlife Management, Biochemistry or Zoology.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with small hand tools and maintenance equipment including ride on mowers, weed whackers and backpack sprayers preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

The selected candidate may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. If assigned such duties, you will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on your current driving record.
