Community Science and Watershed Restoration Intern

LOCATION OF POSITION

Tawes, Anne Arundel Co.

Main Purpose Of Job

The main purpose of this position is to work with the Center for Coastal Planning to rollout photo monitoring at living shoreline restoration sites. This work will require use of the MyCoast Restoration Tracker phone app.

This internship will also work with the Watershed Restoration Crew to support efforts in ecological restoration implantation, monitoring and maintenance. Interns will learn about ecological restoration techniques for improved water quality, wildlife habitat and climate resilience.

The internship runs (12) weeks between (June and August). The specific start/end dates, hours, and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.

POSITION DUTIES

Examples of duties related to photo monitoring include:

  • Develop a rollout checklist.
  • Develop a listserv with template emails and a schedule for listserv engagement.
  • Create a photo monitoring installation kit for future installations.
  • Install photo monitoring stations at select sites.
  • Work with community partners to test and educate on photo monitoring.
  • Work with the Office of Communications to publish an article or social media highlighting community science.
  • Review submitted photos for quality control and develop a time lapse slideshow to show site changes over time.

Restoration duties will vary depending on season and region. Examples of duties may include:

  • Conduct invasive plant and native tree survival surveys and help map results. 
  • Assist with invasive plant control.  
  • Monitor ecological restoration projects and assess establishment. 
  • Assist with plantings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must be a current college student, undergraduate or graduate level. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or skills in communications, Environmental Science, Computer/ Information Science/ Technology/ GIS, Ecological restoration implementation, monitoring and Landscape management.
