ENcourage Engineering Math Learning Assistant

The Engineering Success Center (ESC) in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering (WSCOE) provides the first level of support to undergraduate engineering students. The ESC office is home to the assessment, recruitment, retention, scholarships, Open Option and Engineering Science advising, middle/high school outreach, career readiness & professional development, and engineering programs dedicated to serving underrepresented populations for the WSCOE.

ENcourage Engineering Math is a summer program in the ESC designed to support incoming first year engineering students in the math placement process. Engineering students have higher success rates when Calculus is completed their first or second semester. ENcourage offers two three-week virtual math camps, as well as virtual community and on-going support. https://www.engr.colostate.edu/orientation/math/

Description: The Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering is looking for Learning Assistants to assist with virtual office hours during ENcourage virtual sessions. There are two sessions: June 10-28, 2024 and July 22-August 9, 2024. Learning Assistants can work one or both sessions. The office hours will be conducted through Zoom and consist of guided practice sessions and answering students' questions. Learning Assistant virtual hours options will be 9-11AM, 1-3PM, and 5-7PM (schedule will be set with supervisor.) The student employee must have strong communication skills and expertise in Pre-Calculus.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate daily (Monday-Friday) live guided practice sessions using Zoom covering pre-determined topics in: Algebra, Trigonometry, and Logarithmic and Exponential Functions;
  • Facilitate daily (Monday-Friday) virtual office hours where students can ask questions;
  • Record and upload the practice sessions to the cloud;
  • Work autonomously on projects assigned by your supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled graduate student or upper-level undergraduate student in Engineering, Math, or similar program;
  • Must have strong communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision;
  • Advanced proficiency in Pre-Calculus topics;
  • Proficiency with video creation and recording tools;
  • Proficiency with Zoom

Position Timeframe: late 2024-August 2024 (two sessions available)

Compensation:

10-20 hours per week at a pay rate of $20 per hour
