Engineering Intern- Construction Management Survey

Overview

We are looking for Engineering Interns in the Road & Bridge and Engineering Departments!

There are 5 internship positions available within the Engineering and Road & Bridge Departments. 2 positions will be working within the Construction Management Group, 1 position will be working on our Survey Crew, and 2 Positions will be working with Road and Bridge collecting data on drainage structures.

All interns will have the opportunity to work with our Project Engineers, Surveyors, Construction Managers, and Road and Bridge Managers to deliver high-quality roadway, drainage, and bridge projects for the citizens of Larimer County. Working as part of a team, you will ensure that public works construction activities undertaken on behalf of Larimer County are completed in compliance with the design plans and specifications. 

This is a temporary position. The typical schedule for this position is 7am - 4pm Monday to Friday, with some flexibility on start and end times. Project locations cover the whole of Larimer County including Mountain, Plains, Urban, and Rural areas. 

 

Responsibilities

Specifically, this position:

  • Inspects materials and workmanship on public works projects to ensure conformance with established plans and specifications.
  • Works on a survey crew; operates and employs various types of surveying equipment and instruments including transits, levels, site rods, tapes, chains, the oddities, EDMs, total stations, and related equipment.
  • Inspects various structures such as utilities, streets, bridges, and other off-site construction; checks line, grade, size, elevation, and location of structures for conformance with plan specifications and regulations.
  • Takes samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories; performs quality assurance tests on concrete, aggregate, asphalt, and earthwork embankments; performs routine field tests.
  • Makes and checks mathematical calculations related to construction quantities and basic engineering design.
  • Gathers field data and performs layout for the construction and modification of public works facilities.
  • Participates in the preparation, updating, filing, and retrieval of a variety of engineering permits, maps, documents, records, and drawings.
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public concerning engineering and construction activities.

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Perform physical activities associated with field data collection from drainage ways, bridges, and other road systems features including standing and walking for several hours at a time and working out-of-doors in various weather conditions.
  • Perform job activities and physical demands requiring strength to lift, carry, push, pull, and otherwise move tools, material samples, and objects up to 50 pounds. Additional demands on a constant basis for talking, hearing, listening, ordinary conversation, seeing (near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, field of vision), and gross and fine motor skills coordination while standing, walking, and kneeling for long periods of time.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.

 

Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Driver's License required.
  • Completed at least the sophomore year of study in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field (such as Environmental Engineering for the storm water quality positions or Construction Management for the construction position) required.
  • Be experienced in using word processing, spreadsheet, and database software on a personal computer utilizing a standard computer keyboard; knowledge of AutoCAD and/or ArcMap GIS software is preferred.

Supplemental Information

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
