Job Summary

 

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides outdoor recreation activities and manages Minnesota’s natural resources to create economic opportunity and a sustainable quality of life. We are driven to find talented, innovative employees to help us carry out this mission.

The DNR is currently seeking a Planning and Engagement Student Worker in St. Paul, MN. This position exists to provide supervised technical assistance to the Division of Fish and Wildlife Policy and Planning Program in the implementation of its work, including but not limited to work planning, staff and public engagement, strategic planning, and policy analysis/development, particularly related to climate change.

The anticipated dates for this temporary, part-time (50%) Student Worker position are from approximately June 1st, 2024, through May 31st, 2025. Working hours and days will be flexible around the student’s class schedule. The position’s workdays are Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; 10-15 hours per week while class is in session and 20-30 hours per week during school breaks.


This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a full or part-time basis.  If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement.


Responsibilities include:

  • Support Policy and Planning Program and other division staff in integrating biological and social information into fish and wildlife management, through planning, project management, and public engagement tasks.
  • Provide administrative, planning, and communication support to the Fish and Wildlife Climate Team.
     

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker, you must be a student enrolled in an educational program or planning to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. As a student, you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution, he/she must carry at least six semesters (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.
  • Completion of two (2) years of post-secondary education in fisheries, wildlife, conservation biology, natural resource management, ecology, zoology, human dimensions, environmental policy, environmental planning, or closely related field.
  • Excellent communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner.
  • Student involvement in fisheries and wildlife, conservation biology, natural resources, ecology, zoology, human dimensions, environmental policy, environmental planning, or related research or implementation projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in master's or PhD program in fisheries, wildlife, conservation biology, natural resource management, ecology, zoology, conflict resolution, human dimensions, environmental policy, environmental planning, or related field.
  • Demonstrated academic, volunteer, or professional achievement recognition or leadership in fisheries and wildlife, conservation biology, natural resources, ecology, zoology, conflict resolution, human dimensions, environmental policy, environmental planning, or related field.
  • Knowledge and experience with standard literature review techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with fish and wildlife conservation issues.
  • Professional, intern, or volunteer experience working in a professional or academic setting on complex fisheries and wildlife, conservation biology, or natural resource event, project, or issue.
