Intern - Planning

Community Development Planning Intern

The Intern role consists of responsible professional work in the assigned area that allows for hands-on experience related to coursework in relevant field. The intern supports the planning team with various projects and tasks, including supervised collaboration of possible application reviews, site visits, and research projects in alignment with the Community Development Department policies and procedures.

 

Schedule: One to two days a week. Flexibility to work around candidate availability. 
Hiring Range: $20.41 - $24.01

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the duties listed on the position job description, the following are additional duties for the position identified below. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Researches and completes data verification for various planning related projects.
    • Large project will be assigned to them to ‘manage’ under the supervision of the assigned supervisor.
  • Supervised assistance with customer and resident inquiries.
  • Supervised review of variances and other administrative planning applications. 
  • Possible supervised site visits to projects for landscape and architecture inspections. 

 

GENERAL DUTIES:

Under direct/close supervision, may perform the following tasks (listed tasks are illustrative only and it not a comprehensive list of functions and tasks performed in this class): 

  • Assists in special project work
  • Completes assigned research
  • Provides office support
  • Prepares data for reports

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in city planning, land use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, or related design profession plus one year of experience in municipal or private sector planning.  Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in city planning, land use planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, or related design profession and some experience preferred.

Experience 

No experience required

Some research or work experience in assigned area-preferred

Or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Must be at least 18 years of age. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, DMV check, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry.
 

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment. (Preferred)
