Innovation and Digital Transformation Intern

INNOVATION AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION INTERN

What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? Are you ready to make a tangible impact this summer? 

 

The City of Newport News Innovation Office in the City Manager’s Office is looking for two (2) ambitious interns to dive into the worlds of Open Data and Business Process Analysis. We’re looking for ambitious problem-solvers to jump in and contribute to our Innovation team. In this role you will research and evaluate emerging and cutting-edge technologies for potential use in government. A summary of the internship projects are listed below. As an intern, you’ll be essential to the Innovation Office. You’ll have an opportunity to network, learn about, and contribute real value and meaning to the larger organization. 

 

Open Data Project (Internship) • Objectives: Enhance public access to city data, develop data visualization tools, and ensure the city's data is accurate, complete, and readily available. • Key Activities: Inventory and prepare city datasets for publication, create impactful visualizations, and update the open data portal. • Goals: Publish 1-2 datasets, create and implement a data visualization, and leave a lasting mark with updated documentation and a comprehensive final report. 

 

Business Process Analysis Project (Internship) • Objectives: Streamline city operations by mapping and analyzing current business processes across various departments for efficiency and effectiveness. • Key Activities: Conduct interviews, utilize process mapping tools, benchmark against industry standards, and support the implementation of process improvements. • Goals: Map 2-3 key processes, deliver a detailed analysis report with proposed improvements, and present your findings to stakeholders. 

 

How much money can I make? The rate of pay for each of these internship opportunities is $20.00 per hour. 

 

What type of schedule will I work, and how long will the internship be? You will work about 30-32 hours per week starting in early June until early August. Mon-Fri 8:am-5pm, with flexibility for the perfect work-life balance. 

 

What type of degree program would be best be suited for this internship? While we have a preference for graduate students, we enthusiastically welcome applications from talented undergraduates who have a passion for technology, efficiency, and open governance. 

 

What are the qualifications for this internship? • Interest in the intersection of technology and how companies/organizations deliver high quality services. • Interest in and some experience preparing and delivering presentations. • Growth Mindset – Do you see obstacles not as roadblocks but as opportunities to get creative, think outside the box, and problem-solve? We’d love to hear about a challenge you’ve had to overcome! • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Adaptable as both a supportive team player and leader.
