Position Title: Carnivore coexistence undergraduate research assistance (undergraduate)

Organization: The Center for Human-Carnivore Coexistence (CHCC), an academic institution housed at Colorado State University, is focused on integrating transformative science, education, and outreach to minimize conflict and facilitate coexistence between humans and carnivores. Find out more about the CHCC here: https://sites.warnercnr.colostate.edu/centerforhumancarnivorecoexistence/about/

Description: The Crooks Lab in FWCB is currently seeking one undergraduate research assistant to help with multiple projects related to carnivore coexistence. The research assistant will help go through camera trap images from an assemblage of wildlife from SW Montana, review literature about strategies to coexist with carnivores, and aid in other tasks in the lab. The research assistant will participate in the CHCC Undergraduate Research Experience, which includes presenting an original research project at FRSES, CURC, MURALS, or another public forum and attending bi-weekly lab meetings.

Context: Grizzly bear populations have rebounded since the Endangered Species Act 50 years ago. Their recovery depends on working lands, where they often interact with humans and human livelihoods. Understanding their space use and habitat requirements is important for quantifying these interactions. We set up camera traps in Montana in 2023 and 2024 and now would like to review the results to plan for future studies.

Gained skills: The research assistant(s) will gain skills in data management, mammal identification, camera trap study design, and conducting research.
