The department of Journalism and Media Communication is seeking one, part-time research assistant to support a project on technical communication in the field of natural resources management. This position exists to provide technical communication support to the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS) Office of the National Park Service through the Effective Communication of Natural Resource Conditions in Parks project – a joint effort between the Department of Journalism and Media Communication at Colorado State University and the NRSS.

The Effective Communication of Natural Resources Conditions in Parks project exists to support communication efforts of scientific information that is targeted for use by resource managers within the National Park Service system as they make management decisions regarding park resources. The research assistant hired through this announcement will provide high-level formatting and editing support for research publications produced by the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate office of the National Park Service.

The Research Coordinator completes essential technical communication duties for the Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate Office of the National Park Service. Technical communication duties primarily involve editing, formatting, and writing of technical publications. 

The research coordinator(s) will report to Assistant Professor, Ashley Anderson and will work in conjunction with the NRSS office of National Park Service to monitor the progress of this position.

The work will occur during the 2024 summer, with a variable schedule depending on project needs. We anticipate up to 40 hours per week of support needed for the project. 

Job duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing technical documents and reports
  • Organizing documents and files related to water resources following federal records management structure
  • Assisting with 508 compliances
  • Research and summarize water resource case laws, which may require geospatial skills
  • Writing summary documents regarding water laws in the US
  • Assisting with web articles and other outreach regarding water resources and other natural resource science
  • Completing a report and web article describing work experience
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Experience with technical writing and editing
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Responsible and honest
  • Meticulous organization skills to efficiently keep track of the multifaceted work on this project
  • Demonstrated initiative to keep a complex project advancing on time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate-level coursework in natural resources, communication, outreach, education, or leadership
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Project management experience
  • Experience with ArcGIS and programming languages for customized geospatial analysis
