Civic Engagement AmeriCorps Member

WHAT YOU’LL DO 

The Civic Engagement team supports City Year's mission by organizing volunteer projects to support schools and community centers. Civic Engagement First-Year Corps members will focus on community engagement and facilitating 

service opportunities. You’ll gain professional experience planning, coordinating and leading Service Events that engage community and corporate volunteers, youth and fellow AmeriCorps members in transformational service with City Year. 

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

As a valued member of the Civic Engagement team, you will share in some or all of the responsibilities listed below. If you have not done all these things, that is okay. We don’t expect you to come in knowing how to do them and provide ongoing training throughout the year to support you. Plan and lead volunteer service projects to benefit schools and community centers: 

  • Lead small groups of volunteers (10-20) through service project completion as part of events
  • Work with community partners to develop projects that meet their needs
  • Develop public speaking skills to engage volunteers and explain City Year’s impact and mission
  • Design volunteer projects, such as student resource items, murals, and field day activities
  • Complete necessary preparation before events to comply with district policies, like taping and tarping spaces and sketching murals
  • Lead other AmeriCorps members in setting up for service events and leading volunteers
  • Help track and inventory supplies for the Civic Engagement team

 

Support additional community engagement initiatives: 

  • Complete projects requests from community partners, such as murals or park clean-ups, with teammates or small groups of volunteers
  • Work with other non-profits to identify support projects for the Civic Engagement team to complete
  • Support facilitation of additional engagement at schools, such as Hour of Code sessions, Financial Literacy events, and field days.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 

City Year AmeriCorps members are as diverse a group as the communities we serve. We’re looking for you if you want to build yourself, give back and are ready to change the world.  

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Authorization to work in the U.S. is not sufficient. Those with DACA status unfortunately are not eligible at this time)
  • Be 17-25 by July 1, 2024
  • Have a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or college degree
  • Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program*
  • Agree to and complete a background check
