Wildlife Educator AmeriCorps Member

Service Location: Elko, NV

Timeline for Service: September 2024 – August 2025; with possibility for extension into a second term dependent on performance 

Member Position Summary: The Wildlife Educator, an AmeriCorps member, is an essential member of the Conservation Education team. The AmeriCorps team member will primarily support statewide classroom and community wildlife education programming within our Eastern Region (Elko, Lander, White Pine, and Eureka counties). Additionally, the AmeriCorps team member will also assist in developing and facilitating regional outdoor education events, clinics, and field trips to include activities such as archery, fishing, shooting, and hunting. AmeriCorps members can expect to travel, camp, and work outdoors, sometimes during periods of extreme heat or cold. All required travel will be in state and will be reimbursed. Secondary duties will include assisting in development of new programming, training volunteers, and assisting with volunteer projects. Lastly, the AmeriCorps team member may assist other divisions with fieldwork if needed.   

Primary Responsibilities:

• Facilitate wildlife education programming in the Eastern Region
• Develop and conduct diverse community programming with concepts that connect people to Nevada’s wildlife and outdoor recreation
• Develop and assist with angler education, hunter education, and archery education events, clinics, fieldtrips, and community events

Secondary Responsibilities:

• Assist in recruiting and training volunteers
• Participate in and assist with various volunteer projects
• Support divisional field efforts when needed or as time outside of primary duties allows

• Ability or willingness to engage with the public via presentations, phone calls, or digital media platforms
• Exceptional organizational skills
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work a non-traditional work week, including nights and weekends

Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or agree to earn a high school diploma or equivalent before using an educational award. A bachelor’s degree in education, science, outdoor recreation or a related field is preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Additional Guidelines or Expectations: AmeriCorps members are required to wear at least one piece of AmeriCorps gear (i.e. AmeriCorps button, AmeriCorps t-shirt), provided by the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, every day during their term of service. When the member is facilitating a program, they must be in uniform. AmeriCorps members must participate in a minimum of three National Days of Service during their term of service and may participate in additional service projects. 

Member Benefits: AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend of  $25,000, a $7,395 education award upon successful completion of service, healthcare, childcare coverage (for eligible members), and professional development opportunities throughout their term of service. This position is slated to start in September 2024 and run through August 2025, with an option for a second term, based on performance. Temporary housing in a seasonal bunkhouse is available through the end of October until further housing arrangements can be made.
