Position Summary

The Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering's (WSCOE) Scott Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE Program) pairs first- and second-year engineering students with faculty mentors to engage in meaningful, hands on, research activities and projects that will help students better understand the types of problems engineers work on. 

SURE students will work 5-10 hours per week throughout the spring 2025 semester in a research lab overseen by a faculty mentor and/or graduate research assistant (GRA). The program culminates with the SURE Poster Fair where students will showcase their research to donors, university/college leadership, faculty/staff, and family and friends. 

 

Starting Hourly Pay Rate

$15.00

There are numerous research projects across a variety of engineering disciplines. Applicants will identify their preferred projects, however, there is no guarantee accepted students will be paired with one of their preferences.

Required Job Qualifications

  • First- or second- year student at Colorado State University.
  • Declared engineering major in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering.

 

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • First-generation student and/or Scott Scholar (recipient of the Walter Scott, Jr. Undergraduate Scholarship).
  • Individual research projects may have additional prerequisite courses or required skills; these can be found listed in the research opportunities packet linked in the application.

 

Essential Duties and Expectations

While there is considerable flexibility on what the SURE experience can look like from lab-to-lab and student-to-student, it is expected that all students will:

  • Professionally communicate with and respond to SURE Program coordinators, faculty mentors, and GRAs via email, phone, text, or in-person, in a timely manner.
  • Work 5-10 hours/week on an engineering research project, assisting faculty and graduate students in performing experiments, collecting data, and documenting results throughout the entirety of the spring term.
  • Meet periodically (e.g. weekly or bi-weekly) with their matched faculty mentor/GRA.
  • Complete any required training in a timely manner.
  • Attend the SURE Poster Workshop on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
  • Develop and turn in a professional research poster, meeting all deadlines:
    • Tuesday, March 11, 2025 - web overview due
    • Wednesday, April 9, 2025 - electronic draft poster due
    • Wednesday, April 16 - printed final poster due
  • Present at the SURE Poster Fair on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
  • Complete the SURE evaluation survey near the end of the program.
  • Submit work hours using CSU's Time Clock Plus system in a timely manner and according to the bi-weekly pay period schedule.
