Undergraduate Research Assistant
Job Description
Are you looking for hands on undergraduate research experience? We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers from soil and crop sciences, ecology, and animal science. Our group is researching the effects of new manure sensor tech on soil health, crop quality, and environmental impacts of agriculture.
We are looking for candidates for temporary undergraduate research positions. The successful candidate will get experience conducting field (soil, crop, and ammonia sampling) and lab work (organic matter fractionation, elemental analysis, PLFA, etc.). The student will support a Western Sustainable Agriculture, Research, and Education-funded project studying precision nutrient management technology for sustainable agriculture.
This position is seasonal and will be for about 2 months each semester. Students only have to commit to one semester at a time. Experience appreciated, but not required. We will teach you what you need to know.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with soil and ammonia gas sampling in the field after corn harvest in the fall and before planting in the spring. Students must be available and flexible during this sampling period due to the time-sensitive nature of manure application and ammonia sampling.
- Soil samples will be taken with a hydraulic Giddings Truck Probe. While previous experience with this method of soil sampling would be helpful, it is not required, as we will provide training.
- Ammonia sampling will happen simultaneously with manure application. Ammonia gas traps will be assembled the day before application on campus and then taken to the field and placed during application.
- Students should be prepared for field conditions with appropriate clothing and footwear.
Preferred Skills
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
