College of Agricultural Science Residential Learning Community Mentor

Position Description: 

 

The College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) is looking for two (2) CAS Residential Learning Community (RLC) undergraduate students to join the CAS RLC Leadership Team as CAS RLC Mentors for the Agricultural Leadership (AL) community in the 2025-2026 academic year.  

 

Position Dates and Estimated Work Hours: 

 

Mentors may come on staff by the end of Spring Semester to assist with finalizing syllabi, reviewing course materials, and assisting with pre-planning on Fall CAS RLC activities. There is mandatory CAS RLC Mentor Training in July and August (managed remotely). The Fall Semester report date on campus of Wednesday, August 14, 2025. During the Fall Semester, mentors can anticipate working ~ 5-7 hours per week. Additionally, they will be asked to represent their major departments at the CAS Department First-Year Weekend programs tentatively scheduled over weekends in September and October 2025. During the spring semester, mentors can anticipate working ~2-3 hours per week with CAS recruitment activities, such as Choose CSU, and in CAS RLC programming and events. 

 

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

General Duties and Responsibilities: The mentors will join members of the existing CAS RLC Leadership Team to provide in-classroom support for CAS *** learning community sections and RLC event programming during the Fall 2025 semester. In Spring 2026, duties will shift to provide continuing event programming for current RLC participants and recruitment support at Choose CSU and similar events for high school seniors applying to the RLCs in the following fall semester.  

 

In-Person / Remote Work Conditions: Mentors should expect to work in-person in CAS *** classroom spaces on the CSU Main Campus during the Fall 2025 semester. In the event Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 events and activities cannot be held in-person, mentors must be prepared to work virtually, as directed. Mentor Training will take place in Summer 2025 remotely. 

 

The primary duties of the CAS RLC Mentors will include: 

 

Assist with finalizing course syllabi, reviewing course materials, and assisting with pre-planning for course activities in collaboration with CAS *** course instructors in May/June 2025; 

Read or re-read all course materials—i.e., books, articles, etc.—over summer to be familiar with the literature; 

Review of course materials BEFORE each given class period in the semester; 

Participate in mandatory training sessions managed remotely and held during July/August 2025—exact date to be determined (TBD); 

Attend CAS *** seminar classes in Fall Semester and assist with CAS *** class management and logistics, as appropriate; 

Serve as a positive role model and peer mentor as well as a liaison between the CAS RLC students, CAS RLC Director, CAS RLC Instructors, CAS RLC Resident Assistants (RAs), and CSU University Housing staff;  

Model respectful, appropriate classroom and event etiquette;  

Provide guidance and peer-appropriate mediation strategies on issues and/or conflicts that can arise for and between students as they explore leadership dynamics in natural resources; and 

Plan and host, in coordination with the CAS RLC Director and other members of the CAS RLC Leadership Team, fall events that include Ram Welcome Week activities during the week of August 12, 2025. 

 

Additional duties of the CAS RLC Mentors for Spring 2026 will include: 

 

Plan and host, in coordination with the CAS RLC Director and other members of the CAS RLC Leadership Team, spring events, and 

Assist the CAS RLC Director and CAS Recruitment Team to support prospective CAS RLC students, to include meeting with visiting students at Choose CSU, connecting with them by phone and email, and generating stories and news items for CAS social media. 

 

 

 

Position Eligibility Requirements:  

 

Candidates for the CAS RLC Mentor positions must be: 

 

Declared CAS majors with at least two (2) semesters of experience in their CAS undergraduate degree program at CSU; and 

Able to articulate both their demonstrated commitment to upholding CSU’s Principles of Community and ability to work with diverse student populations in the college setting.
