Engineering Learning Assistant & Mentor for the Common First Year
The Common First Year Experience in the College of Engineering is designed to foster a sense of belonging, equip students with foundational technical skills necessary for success in all engineering majors, and to allow students to explore different majors within the college.
The College of Engineering serves students from a variety of backgrounds. Students participating in the First Year Experience as Learning Assistant & Mentors are dedicated to creating welcoming environments that foster a sense of belonging for all students.
The College of Engineering is looking for current undergraduate engineering students who will be sophomores (2nd year), juniors (3rd year), or seniors (4th year +) by Fall of 2025 and who are dedicated to creating welcoming environments where students from a variety of backgrounds can find a sense of belonging here at CSU and within the College of Engineering.
As a Learning Assistant & Mentor, you will be responsible for the following:
In-Classroom Support – Primary Duties
- Attend all classes in assigned sections in fall and spring for ENGR 111 & ENGR 114 (M/W/F- 50 minutes – various times)
- Engage with students in classroom content, discussion, and activities
- Engage with faulty & teaching assistants about course work and student assignments
- Track student attendance and participation
- Lead the facilitation of Friday classroom activities in ENGR 111 (attendance required)
- Support section instructor in the classroom as needed
- Moderate discussion posts and sometimes grade portions of in-class assignments
Outside Classroom Support - Student Outreach and Support
- Develop a mentoring relationship with 30 assigned students that focuses on student identities, strengths, and needs through regular 1-1 meetings
- Support other community engagement initiatives hosted by the College of Engineering
- Intentionally develop a sense of community that supports students from a variety of backgrounds
- Refer students to resources on campus specific to first-year students
- Attend and support in the implementation of signature College of Engineering events
- Learn and effectively use work-related technology, such as EAB Navigate to track student interactions and goal-setting platform
- Utilize effective communications to work with students and staff such as email, text, etc.
Optional Tutoring Role
- Learning Assistant & Mentors who are interested also have the opportunity to provide tutoring for specific first year classes such as CHEM 111, PH141, MATH160, etc.
- Learning Assistant & Mentors who also provide tutoring services will have a pay rate of $16 per hour
- Learning Assistant & Mentors who tutor will be expected to work an additional 3-5 hours per week
- Learning Assistant & Mentors will provide both one on one and group tutoring services
Training and Professional Development
Actively contribute and participate in the following trainings and meeting times:
- August All-Staff Training (week of August 18th 2025)
- January 2026 All-Staff Training (week of January 19th 2026)
- Monthly All- Staff Training Dates (TBD)
- 1:1 meeting with supervisor as needed
- Weekly group staff meetings with faculty & TA for classroom preparation
- End of Year Student Celebration (April 2026)
Required Qualifications
- Must be second year, junior, senior (4+) undergraduate student by Fall of 2025
- Must have 2.5 GPA or higher – preference will be given to those with a GPA closer to 3.0 OR have an upward trend from past semesters
- Demonstrated commitment to creating welcoming environments for students from a variety of backgrounds to foster a sense of belonging for students
- Willingness to learn about individuals from a variety of backgrounds
- Willingness to provide inside & outside classroom support through mentorship & collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong communication skills with the ability to facilitate group discussions
- Knowledge of campus resources and opportunities, in addition to having the willingness to seek out new resources for students as needed
- Demonstrated leadership through campus involvement or work experience
- Interest or experience tutoring in first year courses such as MATH160, CHEM111, etc.
