SMTD Production shops work-study
The SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEATRE, AND DANCE at Colorado State University is recognized as a distinctive program in the performing arts within the state’s land-grant university. The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance invites student applicants for up to 20 work-study positions divided among the 6 production shops listed below. Hours vary but are 10-15 hours per week at $17.00-$18.00/hour.
These positions will assist in the implementation of 4 theatre productions, 2 operas, and 4 dance concerts, along with several other SMTD one-off events.
Job Description:
- Seeking self-motivated, multi-tasking, organized, work-study students who can demonstrate proficiency in one or more areas of theatre production
- May work up to 10-15 hrs/week, must be available for two hours shifts M-F between 8:00 am- 5:00 pm. Some weekends are required.
- Must be willing to work during the fall and spring semesters (some exceptions can be made).
Required Skills:
- Highly organized with great attention to detail
- Must be able to follow verbal and/or written instructions
- Ability to work on projects individually or as part of a team
- Works well under pressure/ tight deadlines
- Can communicate well with others
Costume Shop:
- Basic Sewing knowledge (both machine and hand sewing)
- Basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine
- Must be able to focus and stay on task with multiple distractions in the room
Scene Shop:
- Basic knowledge of power tools
- Basic understanding of construction
- Willing to learn new skills and techniques
- able to lift 50 lbs
- Basic knowledge of metalworking is a plus
Paint Shop:
- Knowledge of color-theory and ability to mix paint/ follow mix recipes
- Ability to quickly learn a technique and execute each step with limited supervision
- Ability to work at heights, lean/crawl/twist and with some heavy-lifting
- Ability to read measurements with a scale-ruler , tape measure, etc. and translate measurements to life-size projects
- Ability to use oil, water, and latex based paints as well as other solvents, etc.
Prop Shop:
- Basic machine sewing skills
- basic carpentry skills
- basic painting skills
- able to help lift heavy objects
Electrics Shop:
- Comfortable working at heights over 10 feet on a ladder or personnel lift
- able to lift 50 lbs
- Knowledge of theatrical lighting equipment a plus
Audio Shop:
- Love for music
- Eager to learn sound for Theatre, Music, and Dance
- Has some knowledge of how a microphone and a soundboard works
- Likes to tinker
- Auto CAD or Vectorworks experience preferred
- Sound Design majors are preferred but not a requirement
