The Perera laboratory housed within the Center for Vector-borne Infectious Disease on the foothills campus focuses on mosquito-borne viral diseases, including those caused by Zika, dengue, and Chikungunya viruses. The research focus of the laboratory is to identify and characterize virus-host interactions and develop methods to utilize this information to block viral replication and transmission. This position is for Student Lab Assistant  to help with these research projects as well as to help with day-to-day operations of the lab. 

This position is for a Student Lab Assistant I. Positions apply established, standard guidelines that cover work situations and alternatives.

 

These duties include:

Research support:

  • Carry out virology, biochemistry and cell biology experiments to generate data for the research project/s assigned in collaboration with senior personnel
  • Record and maintain research data, prepare research data for publication, presentations and reporting

Laboratory support:

  • washing and sterilizing glassware
  • maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment
  • Sorting and disposing of selected disposable laboratory materials and supplies
  • maintaining laboratory sanitation standards and properly disposing of infectious wastes and materials.
  • Maintaining laboratory inventories and ordering

This position may select alternatives that affect the manner with which laboratory-related support tasks are carried out. High level of organization is required of the individual. 

Job Requirements

The ability to work 10-15 hours per week. Prefer students who can work every day 2-4hrs/day  

The individual must have at least 6 months of laboratory experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory and be familiar with virology and cell biology assays (cell culture, CRISPR-CAS9 and siRNA methods), molecular biology techniques such as qRT-PCR. 

The individual needs to display a high level of organization and dedication to the duties required. 

Good communication skills including timely responses to emails. 

Student must be on Work-Study

A car is required since the laboratory is on the foothills campus.
