The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is seeking a student research assistant to help suporrt The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is seeking a student research assistant to help support studies on crop water use (or evapotranspiration, ET), remote sensing, and soil salinity in Colorado. The student must met the following requirements: 

  • be able to work with little supervision, well-organized, detail-oriented, and proficient in the use of field instrumentation (sensors, loggers), and computer technology.
  • be able to travel to field research sites to install and maintain field research instrumentation, and to collect, organize, and process research data.
  • work variable hours during the Summer 2025 term (up to 40 h/wk).

Job Duties:

  • Assist in the installation of a range of land surface energy balance instruments such as net radiometers, soil heat flux plates, temperature sensors, eddy covariance towers, aerodynamic profile towers, soil water sensors, weather sensors, etc. Install dataloggers, solar panels, and routine data collection stations maintenance and data downloading and processing.
  • Routine field data collection with handheld (roaming) sensors as leaf area index (LAI) meters, multispectral scanners, soil water sensors, and other handheld radiometers.
  • Assist in the installation of groundwater monitoring wells and the collection of soil and water salinity samples. Use of an electromagnetic induction instrument (EM-38).
  • Coordinate scheduling of tasks with the faculty supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Fast learner
  • Ability to follow instructions, work well with others, work independently
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to drive vehicles to research sites (possession of a valid driver's license)
  • Ability to lift loads of up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with irrigated agricultural production systems
  • Familiarity with field research instrumentation, sensors/loggers’ manipulation, programming
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication
  • Work efficiently to complete time-sensitive tasks
  • Be reliable, dependable.

Details:

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $20.5 to $23.5/hr,  depending upon background and experience
