Wildlife Staff Biologist - Furbearer Program

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has an opening for Wildlife Staff Biologist in Boise. This position will have primary responsibility for the conservation and management needs of furbearers including wolverine, fisher, lynx, marten, bobcat, beaver, river otter, and other furbearer species. The ideal candidate will have good knowledge of the principles of trapping and furbearer management.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and implementing a statewide furbearer program, including management plan development and implementation, population monitoring efforts, trapping / harvest season recommendations, conflict management, and policy development.
  • Coordinating implementation of program activities with regional personnel, city, state and federal agencies, nongovernmental agencies, sportsmen organizations, private landowners, and elected officials.
  • Coordinating rule-making activities with regional personnel and external interested parties.
  • Presenting recommendations on trapping seasons and harvest regulations to the Fish & Game Commission.
  • Monitoring trends in use and demands on resources; coordinating review of projects and programs; preparing technical reports and position statements.
  • Providing technical support and sharing technical data with other agencies; responding to inquiries from the media, sportsmen, other agencies, conservation organizations, and the public on resource management programs.
  • Representing the Department on multi-agency committees, technical working groups, and at various meetings with federal agencies, special interest groups, community and other state organizations, Native American tribes, and other governmental entities.
  • Providing technical assistance and programmatic support to Department staff on resource management and conservation programs and policies.
  • Developing grant proposals to fund monitoring, management, and research projects.
  • Providing leadership and oversight on implementation of conservation actions in Idaho’s State Wildlife Action Plan related to Species of Greatest Conservation Need (i.e., wolverine and fisher).
  • Serve as lead on implementation of the Department’s Management Plan for the Conservation of Wolverines in Idaho.
  • Preparing and managing statewide program budgets.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of fish, wildlife, conservation biology, plant ecology and/or habitat management practices.
  • Experience evaluating the impact of land use practices and natural processes on habitats; developing and interpreting statistical data and formulas used in biological research; and evaluating and interpreting environmental documents, state and federal regulations for their effects on fish and wildlife, and providing written and oral analysis of findings.
  • Experience with species conservation and management planning, trapping, and harvest regulation development, preferably related to furbearers such as wolverine, fisher, lynx, marten, bobcat, beaver, and river otter.
