We seek a talented, self-motivated student lab assistant to the Zabel lab. The successful candidate will be motivated to learn lab procedures,  follow the lab Code of Conduct and all lab regulations for health and safety. The student will have a strong attention to detail,   be responsible, independent and be able to multi-task. This position is for up to 40 hrs. per week. 

This  position will contribute to  efforts to develop a high-throughput prion diagnostic assay, process tissues and biological material for testing, report results and maintain records. Minor responsibilities include limited field work to collect tissues, general lab duties and other assignments as needed.

Job Duties include:

  • Washing and sterilizing glassware and biohazard trash
  • General cell and tissue culture maintenance
  • Protease K digestions and Western blotting
  • Maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment and lab spaces
  • Assisting in daily maintenance and organization of the lab
  • Assisting lab members with experiments as needed including cell culture, tissue processing, flow cytometry, nucleic acid extractions
  • Aiding in small animal handling procedures
  • Check/Fill liquid nitrogen duers
  • Check/fill mqHOH and EtOH carboys
  • check/maintain incubators (HOH and CO2)
  • wash glassware, plasticware, etc.
  • Clean/decontaminate lab benches
  • sweep/mop floors
  • empty trash
  • schedule biohazard trash pickup
  • bag instruments for autoclaving
  •  re-fill tip boxes
  • weigh mice
  •  take mouse census/inventory
  • back up computer hard drives
  • add/maintain electronic notebooks
  •  make simple reagents
