Undergraduate Laboratory Assistant: Electro-AD
The Reardon Lab is seeking an undergraduate student researcher for the following position:
The research assistant will assist an electro-enhanced anaerobic digestion (AD) project to help the valorization of wet wastes. The researcher will run small-scale AD with applied potentials as part of a bioelectrochemical system. Additionally, this researcher will help develop methods to detect volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and alcohols to analyze electro-AD performance via GC-MS. The student may also be asked to perform basic laboratory research tasks, such as media and sample preparation, culture maintenance, data collection, cleaning and lab organization. A strong candidate is proficient in basic microbiology techniques, familiar with data analysis on Matlab or other software, organized, and able to work well with others. This position is temporary (through the summer), but the student may have the option to continue their work as a research assistant in subsequent semesters if positions become available.
- Required skills/qualifications:
- Student preferably in their junior or senior year, within the department of Chemical Engineering or related field.
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Excel, and one or more of the following languages: Python, C++, R
- Student is current with laboratory hazardous waste training when starting position.
- Student is organized and communicative.
- Preferred skills/qualifications:
- Experience in basic microbiology lab techniques.
- Experience working with anaerobic/fermentative cultures in liquid media.
- Experience in bioelectrochemical system setup and analysis.
