Recreation Leader

May - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I liked that I had the opportunity to work with kids and make their experience as great as can be, while also working with gang involved youth during the night times at several community centers throughout the city.

What I wish was different

The only aspect I wish would have been different would be some of the problems we had with homeless people and some of the youth acting out at night and dealing with the police a bit more than we would have liked.

Advice

I would say to go into this type of work with an open mind and open eyes as this position takes a lot of patience, understanding, and self-control. People may make fun of you, tease you, or act out because they simply do not know any better, but you must stay calm and controlled for this type of work.

Student Intern

June - August 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I was able to work in the Storm Section of Public Works where we were starting the construction phase of a Storm Pump. I was able to work on the RFIs and Submittal log based on my previous experience with the City. I was also able to get involved with the construction meeting and take meeting minutes and prepare the paper work for each meeting. And going out to the site each week was the best part because you got to see the work happen.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a longer time to see the end of the construction happen.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for guidance if you don't know what or how to do something. Everyone does it differently. And also carry a note pad and pen with you when talking with your boss so you don't forget what they tell you to do when you get back to your desk.

San Jose City Council Intern

April - August 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

This internship gave me experiance in local government and how local public policy works. I felt as if I was doing a lot of meaningful work that really benefitted the San Jose community, such as helping organize sexual assault awareness month, and cultural events like the Indian Indepedence Day Celebration. In addition, my writing skills improved as I got the oppururnity to draft speaking points for the Councilwoman. I also loved the team, it was mostly women who were very passionate about the job we were doing.

What I wish was different

Not having an income for this internship was difficult, I felt like the work I did mattered which was nice, but having to get two other jobs to pay rent and for groceries was tough.

Advice

Dress for the job you want not the job you have!
