DuPont

Chemical Engineering Intern

January 2023 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

Some of the projects I worked on; helped with data tracking for several products to improve on step time goals. Led to higher efficiency tracking and determining whether or not procedure changes need to be made. Specified and installed instruments on reactors. Tracked utilities usage for sustainability improvements. Edited batch records and PSM documentation. I enjoyed learning how a chemical manufacturing plant runs. I benefited from a very skilled and welcoming team of engineers who were willing to explain any questions I had. This is a smaller site so I got to know everyone here well.

What I wish was different

It was hard starting off, you get a lot of freedom and have to find the direction you want to go in. Having my office located closer to the engineers would have benefitted me when I started. The Dayton Plant could use two coops, there’s plenty to do and working with someone else on projects especially when both are starting off is beneficial. Starting off was the most challenging part of this coop and I'm still learning.

Advice

Ask plenty of questions, all the engineers are open to explain the process, products, and what equipment does what. Anyone at the plant is willing to help and it is the best to collaborate with people who will be working in the area your project deals with. Lots of the crew here have industry experience for best practices and suggestions that are good to utilize. Make sure to learn the lingo and come up with your own projects if you can.

Process improvement engineer

January - August 2019 • Moncks Corner, SC

What I liked

I was involved in various cost savings projects that were implemented before the end of my co-op term at this DuPont site. The site leader gave us (the co-ops and the interns) various opportunities to assume some leadership roles. I love the fact that every personnel I worked with at this site were so nice and willing to answer questions I asked them. They diligently follow HPWS. Also, strict attention to safety is their watchword. One of the core values at DuPont is RESPECT FOR PEOPLE. I will go back there if the opportunity presents itself again in the future.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I enjoyed the experience I acquired there.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

January - August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

It was a great work environment that allowed me to be very hands on and involved with day to day tasks, as well as major improvement projects.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given slightly more responsibility. There were times where I didn't have much work to do, which made the work day seem extremely long.

Advice

Get involved. Don't wait for people or mentors to come to you and bring you work. Go out in the work place and talk to as many people as possible. Gain as much knowledge as you possibly can because the knowledge gained from work experience is extremely important and what sets you apart from other students.
