Direct Support Professinoal

What I liked

I love creating relationships with the kiddos I support and helping them grow as individuals. The staff members are really supportive and are always willing to help you out. No matter what happens during the day, I leave every night knowing I made an impact on the quality of life the kiddos have.

What I wish was different

I felt like my training and observation time was too short for me to confidently do my job, but this has been addressed, and new staff members feel more prepared now!

Advice

Remember why you started working as a DSP in the first place. Some nights can leave you physically and mentally exhausted, but looking at the bigger picture and focusing on the positive relationships you have with the kiddos is what will keep you coming back day after day.

Advice

It's important to keep an open mind and apply yourself to learning in the experience as much as you can. There are a lot of tasks and it is important to learn each kiddo's likes and dislikes and cares needed to support him or her.
